why isn't Seinfeld available to purchase?

Hi guys

Just (re?)joined this group. I'm sorry if this is an age-old question but why can't I buy Seinfeld on VHS or DVD when by contrast I almost trip over stupid Friends videos every time I enter WH Smiths shop. They are both by NBC. I tried writing to the BBC to ask, and they referred me to NBC, who haven't replied to my email.

Does anyone have a definitive official answer? Preferably a copy of the original correspondence, to satisfy my curiosity.

It may not be a big deal to most of you fellow fans but here in England, Seinfeld is not available on free terrestrial TV and I haven't the money to subscribe to Paramount which does show it. I have about 40 episodes on video but I got into the show late and would like the whole lot. The BBC say they have no plans to re-screen it. It's like owning the Mona Lisa and keeping it covered with a sheet in the warehouse. They've got about a million channels and they've just started screening Curb Your Enthusiasm so you'd think they'd have the gumption to rescreen Seinfeld.

If anyone knows where I can get it, I'd be most grateful. I understand it's available somewhere for illicit download on the internet. Where? Please say I don't need Kazaa? (I have a Mac and they don't do Kazaa for Mac.... aargh). Oh, and broadband... sob.

I don't have an official answer, but the general sentiment is that the show is doing so well in syndication, there's not need to put it out on video (or DVD).

In a mildly Seinfeld-related topic, I just saw a commercial for a beard dye featuring Keith Hernandez. I guess that's what it's come to...

Thanks. This is what I heard and I don't really understand. Would releasing it for personal purchase really compromise its syndicated success that badly? Why wasn't the same logic applied to Friends?

i got all the eps in divx on dvds, id make em into dvds but its 2 much trouble

It might affect the price TBS and other stations are willing to pay for the rights to broadcast Seinfeld. I imagine that the lack of DVD's (or perhaps even a promise that there won't be DVD's for X number of years) would increase the value of a syndication contract.

Yeah, I suppose - it's the only thing that makes sense. I wish they'd done the same for Friends though and then I wouldn't feel such a sense of injustice. If there were more Seinfeld fans in the world, and less Friends ones, the world would be a better place (for me at least).

You can buy Seinfeld on VHS. I know because I saw it in a store yesterday!

However, maybe it's not available in the USA.

*Try* looking in one of those cheapo stores, like King Kong or WA Salvage or Red Dot or whatever the equivilent is in America.

I bought a few of series one, not pirated copies from an Australian online video store. Was called something like OzVids, but it was three or four years ago now.
