Flashbacks

A couple of episodes ago, when Jerry's parents first came to town and Jerry remembered throwing the watch into the trash can, they showed a flashback of Jerry doing so. I don't know what the correct tv term for this is, but I call it a flashback. I HATED IT. One of the reasons I watch the show is that the references to past shows aren't forced down your throat. I just started reading this newsgroups (didn't know it was here), and hope this hasn't been talked about yet.

Just off the top of my head, one of the funniest past-references was when George revisited his mother in the hospital to find the male nurse giving the male patient a sponge bath. Remember, this happened in the episode where the student reporter thought Jerry and George were gay. The first time George visited his mother in the hospital, when she caught him masturbating, George saw a female nurse giving a female patient the sponge bath. Anybody else??

I agree that one of the best things about Seinfeld is that it assumes that the audience is smart enough to remember past episodes and not need the flashbacks. They did seem very out of place on last week's show. But in a way the flashbacks parodied the idea of the flashback. Just like the "to be Continued" episode the week before was immediately followed by a monologue about how much people hate "to be continued." Both of these things, I think, mock the way other sitcoms work. Seinfeld constantly mocks the concept of sitcoms. Remember when George explains that he doesn't have to be a writer because it is 'just a sitcom.' The idea about the butler is a parody of all the stupid shows that make it to the air.

So, hopefully the flashbacks were mere mockery.

Was it really a flashback to previous episode? I thought it was a flashback within this episode and that the flashback scene was never in a previous episode? I'm probably wrong but I don't remember that scene.

It was a flashback to the two part special that aired last August. I believe Jerry and George were on their way to fly out to California to try to find Kramer. Jerry threw the watch away just before bumping into his uncle Leo on the street.

While I like the idea that it was put into the show to parody other sitcoms, more likely it was for those who had missed or forgotten the summer special.

I think the fact that they not only showed a flashback of Jerry throwing away the watch, but also a flashback of Jerry's uncle?? picking up the watch adds to the argument that the said flashbacks were done with parodious intent!

As I recall, the epsiode where Jerry threw away the watch and the episode where his parents came to town was like a two or three-parter. That's the only time I've ever seen them use a flashback and I think it's because the story line wasn't complete in one episode.
