I believe it was stated in the episode that it was in fact Cosmo Kramer -- his Mom was referred to as Mrs. Kramer.

My recollection of how we got the info about Kramer's first name is that the original poster (who apparently is no longer with us) heard it on a radio broadcast in NYC. Now, who knows how THEY got their information -- maybe a disgruntled NBC page decided to leak it or, more likely, an audience member tattled.
