"The Virgin" episode observation

Hi - let me first say that although this is my first post I have been quietly lurking here and enjoying all the Seinfeld enthusiasts who hang out in here.

Anyways, I was watching what I call "The Virgin" episode (I don't know the official name of the episode) tonight and noticed something odd. I know this show is known for throwing around brand names of products, but in this episode a character would offer someone else a Snapple from Jerry's refrigerator and the "audience" burst into laughter. What was so funny about that? It happened two or three times. I get all the humor on this show but can't figure out that joke behind offering a Snapple, unless I missed something but I doubt it since I've seen the episode numerous times.

And also the label was removed from the bottle each time - but that could be because the producers didn't to pay Snapple a royalty.

Can anyone help me with this?

Name-dropping name-brands always gets a raised eyebrow in sitcoms I think. It's always considered pretty low to have to mention a real product, because usually that means you get paid a little extra cash (in this case, from Snapple). Seinfeld also plugged "Yoohoo" in the Bubble Boy episode. Then there's "Honey Comb" cereal, and after awhile, I think people found it funny that a man that makes multi-millions of dollars has to endorse products. It appeared all tongue in cheek anyway.

That is only my take on it. I may be way off-base.

I don't remember what the audience did on the first mention. But when the second offer was made, there is something inherently funny about repetition, I don't know why. Presumably there are a bunch of PhD theses on why this is funny, I just know that it is. Repetition is heavily used in the entire series and I know I enjoy it. The only wild theory as to why we like it that I can come up with is that it makes us feel superior that *we* have spotted it. And feeling superior is always pleasurable .....

That problem intrigues me too. Maybe some comedy maven will enlighten both of us.

Jerry offers it the first time and the Virgin says no. Then Elaine offers it too...maybe that's sorta funny but i guess you had to be there.

As for other name-brand references...Kramer "overbuys" BEEFARINO in the episode where he takes Susan's parents on a handsome cab ride. Beefarino is a play on Beef-a-Roni, which presumably didn't want to be associated with giving horses bad gas.

On "The Virgin" episode there's also a reference to "Tampax" when Jerry is talking to George about his relationship with Susan ("you got yourself a girlfriend").

I haven't been on this newsgroup very long but has anyone ever made a list of all the products mentioned specifically on the show?

The producers wanted to use Beef-a-Roni, but the Chef Boyardee people (or whoever it is that makes Beef-a-Roni), once they got wind of the script, balked at the idea, because they didn't want to make it seem like eating their food led to gas.
