in last night's rerun, Elaine was wearing a cross, pretty convincing evidence for me regarding her religious affiliation. AHA

Or evidence of a fashion statement. Do you call someone a Buddhist or Taoist (I'm not sure which one is correct in this situation) because they have a yin-yang earring?

Hitlerberry, I'll say the same thing to you that I just said to some other goosestepper: If people say they aren't Jewish we accept that and move on. we don't look for hidden Jews. Now shut up.

I did accept that she is Jewish. I have no problem with that concept. I would put good money on her being Jewish. Apparently you cannot read, or do not read all relevant posts. Can I say for sure that she (the character) is Jewish? No.

And your perversion of my handle is an insult to Jews.

you are a total twit. no one who identifies themselves as jewish would wear a crucifix. have you lost all comprehension of what a crucifix signifies. how did they let you out of the locked ward anyway?

Taoist

That's the whole point. The character of Elaine does not identify herself as Jewish. Now, that maybe because she is not Jewish (as I BELIEVE), or she is of Jewish of descent but denies the religion of Judaism. The wearing of a cross can be a symbol of Christianity, either by original religion or conversion, OR a fashion statement.

A practicing Jew would not wear a crucifix. Duh.

Maybe there should be an episode where somebody thinks Elaine is Jewish and no matter what she does, she can't convince him otherwise. Everybody could say "Not that there's anything wrong with it" a lot...

Mark does have a point but the truth is that the writers have planted clues for a Jewish Elaine. Or as I put it they're playing with our heads.

David Tharp [email] "The Lack of money is the root of all evil." George Bernard Shaw

No, Ace, they are playing with YOUR head. Most people accept a person's statement regarding his/her religious affiliation and move on. But not you.

Just what exactly are the "clues for a Jewish Elaine"? I can't remember any. Certainly not any as blatant as the "clues" for a non-Jewish Elaine: "Rabbi, even though I'm not of your faith...", "I'm not Jewish", "I don't even know what a kosher meal is.", "What's a bris?", "What's a Moyle?", the crucifix pendant, crossing herself before entering the bug-poisoned room (even though she did it wrong -- I attribute this to the actress being Jewish and not knowing how to do it correctly).

I have this image in my mind of the Seinfeld creators and writers laughing into their beer and making bets on how much longer this thread will continue. My money's on "Sicut etat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen." ("As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. So there.")

I wasn't watching that closely... how did she do it "wrong"? If she reversed the normal left/right sequence, that isn't wrong. The Greek Orthodox Church does it that way.

That's because you allow them to do that. You are supposed to stop and think.

It's a LOT more common for a non-Taoist to wear a yin-yang symnol than for a non-Christian to wear a cross!! I think we already have pretty strong evidence that Elaine is not Jewish (the rabbi episode - "I'm not of your faith) and the cross, etc.

Yes, it is "a LOT more common." However, your statement in and of itself admits that non-Christians do wear crosses. Yes, there is "pretty strong evidence" that Elaine is not Jewish. I happen to ascribe to that belief as well, that she is not Jewish. However, there is a difference between saying there is "strong evidence" for something and saying that the "strong evidence" proves something or that the case is "closed" due to the strong evidence.

Is Elaine Jewish? No, Elaine doesn't exist. She isn't anything for sure. She is only "probably" not Jewish, or "very probably" not Jewish, or even "extremely improbable" that she is Jewish. Since she doesn't even exist, her definite status can only be alluded to and discussed. And writers, who don't necessarily read alt.tv.seinfeld, can generate discussion in the general public as a whole (trust me, non-Usenet users discuss the same issues we do) by dropping clues and then seemingly contradicting and confirming them at different times.

Somehow, my numerous previous posts have been construed into my making a claim about the character of Elaine's religion. They only have been reminders that we cannot validly come to a definite conclusion about something just because of strong evidence. Anyone who has been wrongly accused with next to no alibi can attest to this. Always keep an open mind.
