Don't know about you guys, but down in Australia we just got the episode where Susan dies. I thought it sucked - sad, shameless, unsympathetic and un-Seinfeld.
Did it cause much of a stir in the States?

To this day, I'm still hoping that Susan didn't really die and that there's a sick, twisted Seinfeld sub-plot that will bring her back...or maybe she's got a twin sister.....Susan COME BACK, WE MISS YOU!

I was shocked at first, but after it sunk in the next day I truly appreciated the irony of the whole thing!

You are truly hopeless. You just don't get it and you never will. Stop watching the show, please, so we don't have to keep hearing your incomprehension of what is patently obvious to the rest of us. BTW, did you know that they are fictional characters and that the writers have it within their power to make them quite inconsistent at times in terms of their behavior? Get a grip, buddy!
Actually, Seinfeld characters DO care about other people - George is worried when his mother's in hospital, Jerry buys his Dad a car for no reason other than love, Jerry tries to help the Paki restaurant owner ... do I need to go on?
George wasn't worried at all about his mom when she was in the hospital. If you missed that, you're a moron.
Got any comments about the other examples pal ... or can't you think?!
concerning the infamous susan=RIP episode, yes, it did cause a stir in the united states, as well. some people thought that seinfeld, well, not seinfeld personally, but the televisions show, seinfeld had gone too far in mocking death and about how serious it is...personally, i thought that it was kinda funny. i think that if you're going to take george costanza seriously in the first place, you have got some problems. no, not you personally, jonathon P. moore. that's all i have to say 'bout that. --risa sang-urai

i saw it as a mixed blessing. earlier in the season, jerry was on /entertainment tonight/ or /extra/ (can't remember which), and he said that one of the characters would not be coming back in the new season. personally, i don't care much for kramer (flame on), and was hoping it would be him. also, i would like to have watched george deal with the marriage. but then, it did leave us with another great george line: "the funeral's tomorrow, but i'm free after that." and it _was_ a really silly way to die. licking cheap adhesive on envelopes because george was, first, too tight to pay more, then he was too lazy to help with the invitations.
cheers.
...funny, irreverent, disrespectful, TOTALLY Seinfeld...
Actually it did...
Yes, Jon, everyone in U.S. AND Canada hated that episode.
"Everyone"? Yeah, and no one goes to that restaurant any more because it's too crowded.

I'm in Canada and thought the episode was hilarious......the reactions of the group were so typical. had it been one the 4 had died it would have been different but Susan never did reallly belong in "their world".
That has to be one of THE BEST episodes! What other show would have the nerve to do someing like that. And i really think that only George would feel no remorse and actually use wis near-widower status to get a date! Just thinking about it makes me almost die laughing!

Yeah I agree.
I saw it for the first time to last night, and I felt it should of been more obviously funny or over-the-top so the audience didn't think about her death.Know what I mean??The best way to get a laugh from death is to be so crazy or wild that the situation doesn't hit home.I found myself thinking it was in bad taste, not like usual Seinfeld episodes.

Ever thought that Seinfeld's best aatribute is its realism? And heh, here's a tip for how that show should have been done: NOT kill her off (after having cemented her as a semi-regular character over months). Consider that as an option? Did many people walk around laughing with you as you yelled "Susan died, but no-one cared! That's soooo funny!"
What was more funny than that was that George tried to get a date with Marisa Tomei the day after she died...

Actually, yes, they did. :) Many people did. Those who actually got the joke, that is.
And I don't think "Seinfeld" is very realistic. "The Bizzaro Jerry" "The Library" "The Red Dot" "The Limo" "The Trip" "The Bubble Boy" "The Opera" "The Junior Mint" "The Handicap Spot" "The Wig Master" "The Soup Nazi" "The Scofflaw" "The Bris"......yes, it mirrors real life almost exactly.
And Susan wasn't a funny character, either. The joke about she and George's love/hate relationship was wearing thin. It wouldn't have been as funny if she had just left George.

Another Aussie here, I was pretty shocked with that episode. Sure George's wishes came true, but the end scene at the hospital was pretty sick. Definately not my favourite. Even the set up earlier with the choosing of the invitations was forced. I don't think susan would have given in to george so easily. Wasn't she a network exec. she must have had enough money to afford the perfect wedding. Wasn't it her fathers cabin that Kramer burnt to the ground? I'm sure he would want his daughter to have a cheap crappy wedding. Let's face it Susan could have done much better than George, but George would be pushed to find someone to match her. If Jerry had kept his end of the pact I'm sure George would have been happy to settle for Susan. We have heard all year in the Australian press that George would never marry, I expected some witty and clever way the issue would be resolved, frankly I was disappointed.

The thing that made the Susan-dying thing so funny was the fact that *nobody cared*. You were expecting them to have some heart-rending scene, but George just goes, "So...let's get some coffee.". I was laughing for days after it aired (and still have it on tape).

So what actually happened to Susan ? I'm afraid I missed the end of that season. Did the real actress pass away?
Thanks,
Z.
The actress (Heidi Swedberg) didn't die but Susan did. She died from toxic poisoning from licking the glue on 200 cheap wedding invitations that George made her buy.
Hi there!
Re: Your question about Susan dying. She died from the glue on the envelopes of the wedding invitations.Apparently,George wanted to save money on the wedding and convinced Susan to buy these old wedding invitations. It turns out,the glue on the envelope was a toxic substance, thus, resulting in Susan's death.
Keep [address]!
I was dissapointed in this episode also. I never wanted him to marry Susan; however, part of the appeal of this show is that the characters are basically good - yet screwed up people. Susan's death was handled so callously that I had to put this episode in the back of my mind so that I could like the characters again. I think they could have handled her death & funeral in a much more sympatetic, yet funny manner. After all, hasn't everyone gone to a funeral where something totally hysterical has happened. If the writers could pull off the "masturbation episode" - there's no doubt that this funeral thing could have been better written.

I could not disagree more. I thought the Susan Dies episode was brilliant - and was stunned that the USA Today "critic" (hey, I read it online, I don't buy it! :)) called it "cruel" and "a low point. Seinfeld the show is all about showing us sides of ourselves we haven't noticed, or choose to ignore. So I will ask this (please say it isn't just me): hasn't each of us been at least one relationship, love or otherwise, that was *so* negative, that we might have felt relief had the person died? Relief, perhaps even joy - but definitely not sadness. Back me up guys! I have been there; I suspect we all have. That's the whole point: we're *supposed* to feel sad, but sometimes we don't. A classic Seinfeld-ism -- and a classic episode, IMHO. Seinfeld's writers and producers showed great nerve in airing an episode like that, knowing they'd get this kind of controversy. And damn, it sure was funny. Notice, also, that George is being punished over...and over...and over for Susan's death. So there's a morality tale here too. The Curse of Susan never dies.
"The Austins" wrote:
The whole Susan dies episode wasn't funny to me at all. Basically, the characters on this show are decent yet screwed up shallow people. But to take the shallow part of them down so low as to not have them care at all when Susan dies went a bit too far. I think it was done to create controversy and keep the sparks going heading into the next season. To me...it would have been much funnier to have George and Susan marry, and then have her catch George cheating on her while on their honeymoon, and have her file for divorce. This would have opened up a whole range of possiblities for future episodes with George dealing with having an ex-wife hell bent on making him pay for what he did, and yet still keeps George single...which is one of the parts of the show that has worked so well, having all the principal characters be single.

'Course it was also a quick way to rid themselves of a recurring character. But Jerry's dumping of his fiancee took all of what, 15 seconds and was ever so convenient. So who knows?
