Fans discuss whether Jerry Seinfeld's appearance on 60 Minutes where he was unaware JFK Jr. had married was genuine or a joke, with most viewing it as comedic bit.
Last night on 60 minutes, Jerry was asked when he planned to get married.
He said, "I'll get married when, say, John F. Kennedy Jr. gets married."
"Uh... Jerry, John F. Kennedy Jr. DID get married."
"....he DID??"
"Yup."
Then Jerry proceeded to sputter and laugh, and then asked for the makeup person to give him more powder, because he had broken out into a profuse sweat.
How could he not know JFK Jr. got married? Does he live under a rock? Doesn't he watch TV? Doesn't he have a radio in any of his Porsches?

That was a joke you missed. The someone famous was accompanying Jacqueline Kennedy was more famous than her. However, she was such a sensation _at the time_ that it was joked in that way. John F. Kennedy is one of the most famous US presidents ever. He was assassinated in 1963 -- this being the cause of his fame as much as anything else.
I don't know how to explain it to you since you are from Norway. Just imagine the most famous leader of Norway's last 100 years or so. Then imagine that he gets killed in public, and millions, almost 35 years later, are not sure who did it, or at least are not totally sure. Then imagine that Norway is the most important superpower country in the world. That's who Kennedy was, and is. Oh yeah, add in that this hypothetical ruler of Norway had an affair (romantic ones) with Marilyn Monroe. If you don't recognize that name, well, forget it then. Go to a library.
JFKJr is also one of the best-looking men in America, which is why hundreds of thousands of women were so dismayed when he came to the end of his bachelorhood. It was on front pages everywhere.
People think Jerry MUST have been joking when he acted surprised at the news JFKJr. got married. Maybe he was trying to deflect a question. Either one could be the case.
I still think it's possible Jerry honestly didn't know about it until Steve Kraft told him.
Some of these big stars do lead sheltered lives, ya know.
If that whole thing about not knowing about JFKJr.'s marriage was just an act, then he is very good.

He's the son of a former President of the US in the 1960's, John F. Kennedy. Kennedy, his family, and the presidency have become icons to many Americans. He was the "Camelot" president -- referring to the glorious reign of King Arthur. I suppose there's just a need to connect him to fanciful mythology.
He was young, the first roman catholic president, he had a beautiful wife and small children. And he was often photographed playing with the kids. this is what makes John Jr so "beloved." Some great moments of his childhood are captured on film. There's a picture of John Jr. saluting at his father's coffin. he couldn't have been more than 5.
And then John-John (as he was called) grew up to inherit his father's looks, much of his money, and his playboy and womanizing attitude. He is NOT the likely candidate to be married. But Seinfeld should have read the papers better!
Why should it interest Jerry wether this dork was married or not. It sure doesn't interest me - nor does the man himself. He's got his fathers' looks, is a rich playboy, and he's getting married - SFW? Why is this interesting? This guy hasn't really _DONE_ anything! He's just like the king of Norway. A nobody!

another rich nobody who is "famous for being famous", so what if he is
the son of an ex-president, who cares, but the fawning losers who self
perpetuate the fame and celebrity "industry". I agree with Jerry and
Petter...who cares. The tabloid and supermarket newspapers are to
blame for this pitiful display of media hype....next thing you know they
happy couple will be having marriage troubles....duh.

state of mind, not who you are related to.

That's interesting. In a capitalist economy (driven by supply and demand), you blame the suppliers for producing what the consumers clearly are demanding (ie. are willing to pay for)?
I honestly believe he was not joking. There was no twinkle in his eye, and he seemed honestly surprised. And he DID break into a profuse sweat afterwards.
Of course it was a joke, everyone in the USA probably knows that JFK Jr. got married. I've seen a few Jerry Seinfeld interviews, and he always says something funny without cracking a smile, that's one reason he is so funny. So, he was sweating, big deal, lots of people sweat during interviews (bright lights, you know). I didn't even notice until he was sweating until he called for the make-up girl to towel him off, which he did just to be funny. --OJs a liar
I think what Jerry intended by his remark that he will get married "when someone like JFK jr gets married" is that he would like to see the attention deflected from him. Of course, this is just my opinion....I could be wrong.
I would tend to agree. If someone says: "I go karaoke singing once in a blue moon, and there happens to be a blue moon that night (they do exist, really), that person still probably won't be going to the karaoke bar that day. JFK, Jr. is (was) so known for his 'eligible bachelor' status that an expression like the one Jerry used in the interview is akin to a pop culture idiom. Besides, I know who "John-John" is, but yet it was news to me that he got married simply because I don't give a damn about his life. Even IF Jerry were not joking, I wouldn't blame him for not knowing this.
I like the comparison someone made to the royal family of Great Britain. Some people, such as myself, don't know hardly anything about what they do socially, don't care, and like it that way!
I agree, too. I don't think Jerry was joking because, if it was a joke, it wasn't very funny and I doubt Jerry would tell it since it would just make him look stupid. It's also like saying "I'll vote for the Republicans when someone like Bill Clinton becomes President" (maybe that's stretching it), but the JFK Jr. wedding was, I believe, well publicized. If Jerry didn't hear it from the news, he would have at least heard it from someone he worked with or someone he happened to be acquainted with. The fact that Jerry broke out sweating is also an indication that he wasn't joking.
The answer to your question, from me, is "yes, that is definitely a legitimate possibility." There seems to be a tendency in the NG for people, once they decide that something is more probable than its alternative, to decide that the less probable is suddenly impossible.
Yes, I agree -- it is unlikely that Jerry did not know JFK Jr. got married. Considering that it was a big event in _so_ many people's lives, it is unlikely that a random person on the street would not know. But, this is different from saying that NO one was unaware. For example, I keep up with world and national news, but I could not care less about who marries who in the celebrity world. Does that make me stupid somehow? If you want to believe that, then fine -- I don't care.
I definitely think that Jerry knew about the marriage. That's where my $ would go if there was a bet on this. However, it's very possible that he didn't. If I had millions of dollars, could afford whatever I wanted, could go wherever in the world I wanted to go, and was busy balancing producing and acting in TV's #1 show, and fitting in a girlfriend (well, I have that part covered), maybe I wouldn't spend my other time reading gossip or listening to it on TV, wherever. Especially when those who produce the gossip and publicize it are always in my face making judgments about my personal life.
I just took a quick poll in my office. I asked the lady at the desk next to mine, "Did you know John F. Kennedy Jr. got married recently?" and she said, "Who?"
So I asked the guy at the desk on the other side of me, and he said "John-John got married? Ha! Who's the lucky girl? Darryl Hannah?"
So there you have it -- just by asking the two people nearest me, two average citizens, and hearing their replies, I can see it is entirely possible that Jerry did NOT know about the marriage. He MIGHT have been joking, and if so, it was an elaborate and self-depreicating one at that, but who knows.
But Jerry ain't an average citizen -- he's in showbiz, JFK Jr. himself is a celebrity. JFK Jr. even "appeared" on the show (albeit being played by someone else and offscreen in "The Contest") Jerry knew.
Jerry made a joke instead of answering a question he did not want to answer. He's apparently a private person who chooses not to reveal much about his true self to the public. No big deal, his perogative.
