Phil Rizzuto

It was "The Scooter", Phil Rizzuto, a former Yankee shortstop (and American League MVP in 1950) and a longtime Yankee radio & tv play-by-play man. Don't know if he originated "Holy Cow", or Harry Caray did, but Rizzuto was known to say it a lot, and in the days before cable, when all markets were regional, nobody really cared if both Harry and Phil said it. Rizzuto was known to ramble on about anything (or nothing) behind the microphone, like yakking about some ballplayer at some dinner for some children's hospital somewhere in Jersey, or some St. Anthony's carnival in some town upstate. He had an endearing way, even if he has lost his concentration in recent years on the game (mistaking routine flies for home runs and balls for strikes). He also was known for his longtime feud with former Red Sox shortstop and White Sox manager Eddie Stanky. But I distinctly remember Rizzuto yelling out "Holy Cow" when Reggie hit one of his 3 bombs in game 6 of the '77 world series against the Dodgers.
