"Seinfeld in Comedy Club Fracas"
Sep 29, 2000 Jerry Seinfeld may be able to deliver a punch line. But he wasn't about to take a punch during a confrontation at a New York City comedy club earlier this week. According to the New York Post, Seinfeld was trying out some new stand-up material at the Comedy Cellar on Sept. 27. Maija DiGiorgio, a comedian making a film about comics, was there shooting the night's performers. Seinfeld, who had his own video crew with him, did not want to be part of the film and had the club managers toss out DiGiorgio and her camera crew.
A witness told the Post that a club manager screamed at DiGiorgio and publicly berated her. DiGiorgio says Seinfeld's video team insulted her, too.
After the incident, DiGiorgio immediately called her boyfriend, Ken Simmons--a former boxer who once worked as a bodyguard for Mike Tyson---to tell him what happened.
Incensed, Simmons, who also happens to be an aspiring comic, showed up at the club and demanded Seinfeld apologize to DiGiorgio, according to the Post.
Simmons claims Seinfeld "ran like a woman out of the club." Meanwhile, witnesses told the newspaper that Saturday Night Live's Colin Quinn restrained Simmons.
Seinfeld's publicist, Elizabeth Clark, told the Post the confrontation was exaggerated. "Jerry asked her not to tape him, which is his right," Clark says. "He completed his act and went home without incident. If there was any fallout, he was not present and not aware."
Meanwhile, Simmons said, "I wasn't going to kill him. [But] if it wasn't for Colin, I'd probably be in jail right now."
