Could they really pull off a comeback?

Although I'm sure that the "We'll be back next year" line was made just for laughs and perhaps to fuel more speculation and debate, I have to wonder though . . .

Setting aside all arguments of "would they" or "should they", focus for a moment on "could they"?

Is it possible for a television show to come back after a nice relaxing year-long break and be as strong, if not stronger, than ever?

Movie stars make comebacks. Musicians make comebacks. Writers and even politicians make comebacks.

Some good, some not so good.

But has a television show ever made a comeback? I can't seem to think of one right off the top of my head . . . and I'm not thinking along the lines of a "What's Happenin' Now" or a "Team Knight Rider" kinda thing. I'm more interested in a tv show that could make a comeback with its original format and cast intact.

Whaddya think? Are Seinfeld and friends talented enough to pull it off?

A better example might be The Jeffersons. If I remember correctly, it was gone for about a season or so and did come back, cast intact, except for a different actor playing Lionel (who was then again eventually replaced by the original Lionel again) and I think maybe George's mother had died, but basically it was the same show.

You've seen the 12 episodes of "Fawlty Towers"? There was a four year gap between the two series of six episodes.

Good question. I've been racking my brains, but I can mostly think of revivals with new characters, ala Star Trek - Star trek Next Generation.

Three exceptions. "Get Smart" came back with most of the original cast a few years back, but it was a bomb. "WKRP in Cincinnati" had several original members come back, (don't know how many seasons the sequel lasted). And "Columbo" came back after quite a few years. But of course it's easy to reunite a cast of one.

I believe that Jerry left the door open because he isn't even sure himself. He could come back. And he'd be paid an amazing amount of money to do so. He has kept the TV set. On Leno he mentioned he wasn't giving it to the Smithsonian yet cause he was afraid it would end up in a crate somewhere like in the last scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Seinfeld - Part II? I wouldn't put it past him. Jerry is a smart guy. It's been written that he wants to start his own advertising agency. He could restart the show and make more money on some of the advertising. He could do it.

Of course now, we wait. Let's talk about it again in 364 days.
