the buttons riff at the end

Liked the episode...nuff said

someone told me that the riff about the shirt buttons came from the very beginning of the first episode. Can someone confirm this? That would make sense when they said "We've had this discussion before" -Mark Simon

That was cute-- almost like saying, there's no point in doing more episodes because the characters have nothing new to say, they are starting to repeart discussions they've already had.

That is pretty much like this newsgroup. About a year ago I would post and read this group. I got tired of the minutia over the best George Line or the What Ifs? Yesterday I came back to the group to see if there was any "dirt" on the last episode. And, except for the Puerto Rican protests it was as if the same messages were here. So, what you said about the show certainly fits here as well.

With observations like this -- which I couldn't make for myself during the initial broadcast because I was too busy being pissed off -- the finale seems to have said an awful lot more about the show itself than I originally supposed. As someone else had pointed out, in the jail cell, they were seated as they had been at Monk's so many times. And what I noticed the second time I watched it, there was no laugh track during the button discussion as the camera pulled away to show this interesting composition. There was definitely a lot more going on there than supposed at first. I think the flashbacks in the trial just threw us off. i agree with your suggestion that our collective disappointment in the finale may have caused us to miss some key entries and suggestions. if you have the episode on tape, bite the bullet and watch it again . . . i did and i appreciated it much more. however the courtroom scene WAS way too long; i mean, did any of the viewers need the "contest? what type of contest?" nonsense. they should have done exactly what the episodes did and leave it with a catch-phrase. the only good thing to come out of the scene was the soup nazi - "NO - - next question!"
