Jerry Seinfeld made one thing abundantly clear in talking with Bob Costas
on the "Today" show this week. NO WAY is the series coming back after a
year off, as a lot of people have been speculating based on the ending of the
final episode last May. (Has it been that long ago since we really had "must
see TV?")
Nor is Jerry going to do another sitcom based on any other concept. He
figures he and Larry can't capture a moment as creative as the one they
captured between 1989 and 1998...so why try? (Though Larry David jokingly said
he might enjoy a little abject failure...) So he's just taking a little
extended vacation, while letting some ideas for the next stand-up routine
bubble up and percolate. Some time this spring he starts seriously writing it,
and some time later this year, we may start to see him on the road performing
it. Larry David, for his part, didn't let the failure of his first film "Sour
Grapes" deter him...he's working on other feature film ideas. Will we ever see a reunion of the Seinfeld series characters in a new series? No, and we won't see a spinoff of one or more of them into a different series either. Will we see a one-shot reunion film, either theatrical or for television? That's a more open question. Jerry hasn't closed the door on it.
