Previous dismissals of the ninth season of Seinfeld have included character traits that suddenly popped out of nowhere, e.g. George's huge wallet in _The Reverse Peephole_. Another I once noted was Elaine's drinking in _The Betrayal_ (amazing that Schnapp pulls are allowed at Monk's but outside syrups, jams or condiments aren't, as noted in _The Wife_).
In any case, I was suprised to note this evening the number of shots Elaine downs towards the end of Kramer's party in _The Van Buren Boys_, in the previous season.

Yes, but that is season "8" . "8 and 9 " together comprise the changes at the end of the series after Larry David left. Comedy that was based on "sketch" humour more that based on "personal interactions" (I don't know if it has a name). But seasons 1-7 definitely had the Larry David stamp. One can recognize it in his writing in CYE. His genius for employing our social rituals and personall angst as absurdities and then having them turn on the players in complicated threaded ways.
This team of "Seinfeld" and "David" , both comedy geniuses, Jerry with his observational humour and Larry with his superb writing, beautifully complemented each other in the creation of the "Seinfeld" series.

But doesn't Elaine start drinking in the Wait Out? IIRC, after losing her opportunity with Cary Elwes she saunters out of Jerry's apartment with a 6-pack dangling. (It was a lot like the way she walks away with the bottle of vodka when she finds that Vincent is a teenager in The Comeback.) This episode gets in under the wire as the penultimate show in the 7th season but there you are.
I don't think this character trait is so off the wall and I don't think it was cooked up for easy laughs as the scenes where it looks like she's about to tie one on aren't very funny. She gets progressively more irritable in the last seasons because she's getting older, she's getting tired of the single life and, of course, she can't "spend the rest of my life coming into this stinking apartment every 10 minutes to pore over the excruciating minutiae of every single daily event." She's getting fed up so it's easier for her to turn to drink.
Also, George's escalating shrillness makes sense: as he gets older he becomes more and more like Frank. The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.
I think the show got progressively weaker in the last two seasons but not because character traits "suddenly popped out of nowhere". Some of these traits could be explained as evolution. Seriously! But that doesn't make them funny necessarily. I think it got weaker because the comedy got sillier.
considering evolution and traits, it is interesting to chart the course of Jerry's haircuts through the episodes. He seems to swing between short hair and semi mullets.
I don't know what season this was is in or if it even counts, but what about when she was drinking cranberry juice with alcohol and it got mixed with the guy who was trying to quit drinking? I mean it's not the same, but it shows her drinking

I don't remember the scene in The Doodle but in The Red Dot she's having a drink at a party. No big deal, it's Dick who's the drunk. But in later episodes it seems that she's turning to drink.
