Ever noticed...?

I was at a dinner the other night and cited a scene from Seinfeld that was relevant to the conversation. As my luck would have it there was an anti-Seinfeldian sitting opposite who couldn't be in the same room as anyone uttering the S word.

In a hushed tone he informed me (without even listening to the point I was trying to make) that he and his wife had decided that they didn't like Seinfeld and had agreed to not watch it. He then started in on a line like :"how can you watch a show that ...." before I interrupted him (he'd done as much for me) with the observation that being so solemnly tolerant of others because they liked a particular sitcom was a very Sienfeldian situation.

Unfazed, he continued his rant (to his wife -- the mother of his children, his lover, his audience)while I happily finished my point with the person it was intended for.

So has anyone else noticed this complete lack of a sense of irony in the foe?

Yes, some people express that attitude. The best thing is to change the subject to something less controversial like are they... Pro-Choice? anti-fur? etc...

Well, the dinner was actually a wedding reception. I didn't make more of that as the pair getting married were really keeping things low key. They'd been a couple for about seven years and thought that a big, trad ceremony and reception would be inappropriate (and they're not great respecters of tradition or social starchiness. So it really just felt more like a dinner for family and friends (and very enjoyable, for the most part). We were talking about what, if anything was going to change for the couple. We tried phrases like lukewarm couple instead of happy couple, or pleased couple, perfectly satisfied couple etc. And then we got talking about them getting to the point where they can just say wife or husband instead of my significant other, boy/girlfriend, partner ... etc. And up came the Kramer scene.

Or would have if a certain humourless prat hadn't been listening.

It's taken a while to get to like him. He's the significant other of someone I do like and whose wit and company I tend to enjoy. It's just since she took up the option on the package deal with the guy (I've seldom seen a less affectionate couple, hence that phrase) we've all had to adjust and learn to listen the other way.
