Fans share their all-time favorite sitcoms, with Seinfeld unanimously ranked first, followed by varied choices like The Simpsons, Cheers, That 70's Show, and Frasier.
After watching another repeat of a Seinfeld episode and
laughing out loud (even knowing the coming lines), I thought how rare
that was for a sit-com to continually hold that appeal.
I was wondering how you would rate Seinfeld in your Alltime Top 5
favourite comedies?

4) Family Ties

Mine are, and everybody should watch them :
1- Seinfeld 2- Titus 3- That 70's Show 4- Friends 5- Will and Grace
And I don't believe that the Simpsons should be consider a sitcom... hmm...

Just as Seinfeld added to our popular culture with phrases such as "sponge worthy", "Helloooo, Newman..", "close talker", "master of my domain", ... and on and on, ...
So did Get Smart. "Well, would you believe,...", "Sorry about that, Chief", "Missed it by THAT much,...", " ... and LOVING it.", . . .
Those phrases were recognizable and spoken by all the "cool" people in the sixties after Maxwell Smart used them.
As silly as the series was, it also had an insightful edge of mocking our trivial social structures (as Seinfeld does) in the context of "Smart's" holding on to ritualistic social customs in otherwise ridiculously dangerous situations.

(Bear in mind that "situation comedy" and "animated program" are *not* mutually exclusive terms.)
To me, situation comedy mainly means the same sets/ locations and basic premise week after week. I think The Simpsons is and has been much more varied in those areas than Seinfeld, though that's not a good or a bad thing.
It's certainly a comedy; maybe it's on the edge of what a situation-comedy is.

Never thought about it, but it's true. The couch is the central figure in most sitcoms. Have you seen these people? Creating and resolving their little sitcom problems in 22 minutes, usually from the couch? Didja ever notice they're always sitting? I think that's where the 'sit' part comes from?

Father Ted is with out a doubt one of the funniest shows on T.V. It's a shame that the actor that played Ted died, they only ended up making about twenty episodes. If anyone sees that this is on T.V. I strongly suggest you watch it. It's fucking hilarious.
