Okay, Clueless, lemme fill you in on way everyone thinks you're a complete bonehead:

1. Most news servers have a limited amount of space, with new messages replacing older ones. Posting even a small binary to a non-binary newsgroup can push off *thousands* of text-based messages. Not a problem if you read newsgroups every day (like I do), but if you check 'em only every couple of days, a single binary can mean thousands of missed messages.

2. Many ISP's will DROP non-binary newsgroups that begin to get a lot of binaries. If we want this newsgroup to continue to be available to everyone, it's important that binaries not be posted here.

3. Posting binaries to a non-binary newsgroup can cost some people MONEY. Many people (especially Europeans) pay for their internet connection by the minute. To keep costs down, they log on and download all new messages at once, then disconnect and read them offline. Binaries greatly increase the amount of time they stay connected, which costs them more money. Others have a download limit per month, and don't want to exceed it because of binaries posted to non-binary newsgroups. And there are plenty of people with free, unlimited connections who also prefer to read offline since they don't want to tie up their phone.

4. For every bonehead that posts binaries, there'll be another half-dozen idiots who will think "Gee, I guess it's okay to post binaries in here. I'll upload this really cool 15MB file..." Part of the reason binaries are met with flames is avoid this--we need to make sure everyone realizes binaries are inappropriate in a non-binary newsgroup.

As others have pointed out, the solution is to make the binaries available elsewhere. Get a free website and upload them to it, then post just a *link* here in the newsgroup. Or post them to a binaries newsgroup, and include a message here in this newsgroup so people know. Oh, and you'd better get another news account--your current one will be cancelled because I contacted Newsfeeds.com about this. :-)

First of all Sorry bout the mix up but your info on england is not correct. For tele conection it costs about �10 a month for unlimited access. For high speed conection it costs �15-�20 a month again unlimited. The boneheads are the ones on this ng requesting the files. I would have never even thought of putting anything here except that there were many requests for episodes excluding the trade requests. I can only asume the posts were very old seeing as how my server retains about 80,000 posts a group before it drops anything which sucks having all those headers stored on HD. I just assumed in this particular instance the ng rec.tv.seinfeld was the text seeing as how this is the first group I found without a binary archive. and no I didn't post 86 messages

And that's true for all of Europe? Sorry, but there are *many* areas where people still pay by the minute, usually because of telephone pricing. Hell, there are areas in England alone where that's true. And yes, I do have several friends in the UK and Europe, and I've been listening to them bitch for years about BT. Even in the US where broadband and free dialup are very widespread, there are still rural areas where people must pay by the minute.

Here's a hint: if it's a binaries newsgroup, its title will contain the word "binaries".

Only a v. small minority of people in the UK have unmetered access. I, like most people, pay by the minute for my access so log on, download all and log off just as John described. (In my case though my ISP has filtered out the binaries).
