My girlfriend hates Seinfeld

There may be no accounting for taste in sitcoms but it's frustrating that my girfriend hates the show. She's tried but finds the characters repulsive, insensitive, etc. She seems to have a need to "identify" with characters before she can enjoy a show. I agree with most of her criticisms about the characters: most everyone is self-absorbed, unkind, insensitive, and so on. Yet, she laughs. I don't get it.

Hmmmm. Sounds like your girlfriend has some other issues. Perhaps she is jealous of your obvious dedication to the show.

This may be a variant of what psychologists call the "Three Stooges Paradox". Research has shown that the only the Y chromosome contains genetic material (dubbed the Larrycurlymo gene) that allows one to think the Three Stooges are funny. Lack of this gene causes one to think the Stooges are stupid.

My wife exhibits all of the the classic symptoms, including what may become known as the "Seinfeld Corollary". This is a much less common condition, in fact confined to a very small portion of the female population (due to a rare recessive mutant gene almost unknown in the male of the species). Part of this variant of the phenomenon, is that the subject, even though vehemently asserting that they dislike "Seinfeld", is often known to watch the show in secret and, even though observed laughing out loud, continue to deny that it is funny. Usually the subject prefers "Murphy Brown" and "Friends" and feels that "Sisters" is high drama. Fortunately, this phenomenon has no demonstrable effect on the success or failure of male/female relationships.

I find that I like the show because I LIKE all the characters. I mean, I wish that I was all of them (the main ones) except George, I don't wish I was george. But then george is WHO WE FEAR WE ARE. I would LOVE to be Kramer, in fact some times I feel like I am Cosmo Kramer.
