I finally caught this for the first time last week since they changed its timeslot (yeah, real nice, put it on opposite Frasier.). Anyway, I noticed the production company blip at the end was for 20th Century Fox. I read recently that they shut down their television production company--I take it this means the series is already dead?

No, 20th is going to remain very much in business, feeding both its own Fox network and other nets. It's Columbia/Tri-Star (a division of Sony, a foreign company that can't legally own an American network or hold TV licenses) which is trimming back its TV operation.
As to "Bob Patterson", the series is in trouble, but not because of its production company---it's because it isn't delivering the Nielsen numbers for ABC so far.
