Just thinking, Discussion has said that the original plan for Kramer was: Hoffman, then they used: Kessler, then they got the rights to use: Kramer. All these names are Germanic names. Any reason for that? Just wondering.
Now, I know from comedy experts that words and names with a *K* in them are generally funny so the Kramer/Kessler is well founded that way.
BTW: In Get Smart (my second favourite series :-) ) one arch enemy is also Kessler.
Another option Larry David considered was Bender. Is that German? Sounds Jewish.
I think it's possible that he wanted to use Kramer, but if that fell through he may have wanted something that sounds similar to Kramer, thus Kessler. Don't know how this explains Hoffman or Bender, but there you go.

Wasn't Bender a member of Jerry's and George's softball team? Wasn't he supposed to replace Jerry in the final game, because Jerry had to go to Manya's funeral (from The Pony Remark)? Didn't George say something like: "Bender? He can't play left! He stinks!"? I don't know why this line is tattoed on my brain, maybe just because of the Bender name...
Now that I think about it more, it seems it was something more like Beater, or Beeder.....
I thought in the 'opposite' episode, the names were very good and funny.
Feldman - Kramer's opposite and Vargus - Newmans opposite, were great and really captured my sense of humour.
Gene - George, was also a great name to choose.
