NYC Mayoral Race

According to the local AM radio morning talk guys, the show's ending was taped yesterday. The show had established an agreement with Guliani(sp?) and Dinkins that the winner would tape the press conference segment (not yesterday, wednesday i assume.) But do consider that the sources of this just may not be accurate...I don't know where they got their info.

Not necessarily, the way I saw it there were nine possibilities stemming from two events and three outcomes.

The two events are Elaine's nametag idea and the yogurt issue. The outcomes are helps Dinkins, helps Guiliani, no effect.

Thus, in the final version of the ep, we saw both Elaine's nametag idea and the yogurt issue help Guiliani. But, considering how close the race was, it's not unreasonable to assume a storyline where one issue helps one candidate and the other issue helps the other candidate.

However, since most tv writers are not as combinatorially inclined, chances are they probably went the sure-fire overkill method, which would be both issues end up helping Dinkins, though I'm kind of curious what innovations the writers came up with to convince people that Elaine's nametag idea could ever be a winning issue.

I don't think they had any intention of using the name tag bit if Dinkins had won. If you noticed, when Elaine made the suggestion, Dinkins aid did not comment on it. I see this to indicate that they did not want us to know that he was actually going to suggest it to the mayor. This way, if Dinkins wins, they can ignore the rediculous idea, or play it in a different angle. They may even had an ending where Dinkins' aide was a trader and gave the idea to Giuliani. (nah!)

I think that if Dinkins had won, they would just have changed all the names in the script. The aide would have been to Rudy and Rudy would've lost because of the name tag thing and Dinkins would've blown the cover on the yogurt shoppes.

This might be clue to the alternate ending: I saw a promo for the episode, several days before airing, that clearly implied that Kramer had 'fixed' the election. (Not there's anything wrong with that). However, that scene was not in the final cut!

Sure he did. He specifically said he'd mention it to Dinkins.

(at least I'm fairly sure he did, I've seen the episode several times)

If Dinkins had won, they would have only had to reshoot one scene--the one with George and his parents. Here's a rough outline of how the alternate scene would go. FWIW, I think the producers expected Dinkins to win. Otherwise, George's boyhood pal would likely have been a Giuliani advisor. Here's the scene recast for a Dinkins win:

George's mother: Oh Georgie, isn't he smart? His nametag idea is brilliant!
                 I could tell that he was smart when he was a little
                 boy...

George's father: I knew that Giuliani was a moron! How could anyone
                 honestly believe that there's no fat in that yogurt
                 stuff? You just can't vote for a mayor who could keel
                 over from a heart attack at any time...

...etc.
