"Ti-Jean"? Isn't he too big to be called "Ti" - I remember meeting Guy Lafleur and he was always "Ti-Guy" which made sense since he was small for a hockey player. Or does it just mean "sweet" instead of "little"?

With Guy Lafleur it's meant as an affectionate nickname that has a bit to do with his physique , his personnality ect...

In the case of our Honorable Premier it's probably a bit of sarcasm and a little of poking fun at him. Don't forget he has called himself " Le p'tit gars de Shawinigan" when he was campaigning. ( 'that a word?) . In any case Robin Hood's Li'l John , like Newman , isn't a little anything. :-)

That is correct. "Ti-[name]" is widely used in Qu�bec and has little to do with physical size. From my own observations, it has more to do with the fact that the person is easily approachable.

"Ti-Jean" in referring to our honored PM has a long history; in one of his first TV talk-show appearances, when he was only a regular member of Parliament (he might have been a minister, but I don't think so), the hostess asked him to introduce himself and he said "I am Ti-Jean Chr�tien, from Shawinigan". His later use of "le p'tit gars de Shawinigan" is an example of how he is able to use his (many) faux pas to his advantage, by repeating them to show he is able to laugh at himself.

Since we are OT, let me share a little tidbit I witnessed. About 7 years ago, Ti-Jean was visiting UN peacekeepers somewhere and he put the blue helmet on backwards. The media had a field day with that one. Shortly afterwards, he was given an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa; we were at the same graduation ceremony since I was receiving my B.A. that year. He walked onto the stage with about 100 faculty members (from numerous universities, since we were greeting a new Chancellor); everyone was wearing the little hat (don't know what it's called in English) except Ti-Jean, who was carrying it in his hand. About 45 minutes into the ceremony, he was invited to the podium to give a speech. He walks up and says "is there a front and a back to this thing?" and puts the little hat on... backwards! Everyone was rolling in the aisles laughing. To this day, I don't know if he meant to put it on backwards or not.

Okay, the rest of the story. When I walked on stage to get my degree, I stopped to shake the Chancellor's hand, the Rector's hand, and Ti-Jean's hand, since he was sitting next to the Rector. He said "congratulations, miss"; I said "likewise, sir". He went "huh?", he didn't know the French word for likewise, "pareillement", could be used in other contexts than "happy new year", "likewise".

After the ceremony, my friends and I decided to have our parents take a group picture in the big red velvet staircase in the lobby of the venue. We were all posing when security guys came over and told us we had to move because the PM was coming down the stairs and the media were coming up to interview him. We were shoved in a corner with no other than Aline, Mrs. Ti-Jean herself. She is quite short and she was stuck with 4 amazons in togas proudly holding their degrees. She looked up at us and said, "it's a good thing you are getting an education, girls, this way you'll never be pushed in a corner waiting for your husbands to stop talking". Did we EVER wish we had a tape recorder handy.

On Mike Bullard's show last night [For our US friends, It's a Canadian "Letterman"] Jean was a really funny, relaxed, guest. One of the truest things Mike Bullard said at the end was how lucky we are to have our Prime Minister in the studio and no metal detectors at the doors or bomb squads checking the place out.

(Perhaps just a catering company making sure there were no cream pies). :-)
