Jerry on 60 Minutes

Jerry will be interviewed on 60 Minutes on Feb. 9. Just thought i'd let you know.

saw Jerry on 60 minutes sunday night and he looked great! I love it that he's basically the same person in real life as in the show and it was terrific when he said "what a scam!" I hope he gets to marry Shoshonna. Seems she's the best thing that ever happened to him! And, can you imagine Jerry doing the housecleaning before going out to do his show!

For me one of the most interesting parts was seeing just how "hands on" Seinfeld is during the creation of the show. (Another one was seeing what a fox his girlfriend is <g>) Which shouldn't come as a surprise, I guess, but seeing him in a room full of writers and skulking around the set impressed me as Seinfeld being more responsible for the final result than I'd realized before.

I think one of the keys to understanding why his show is so good is to realize that Seinfeld is a consumate stand-up comedian. Not only from his point of view where anything in life no matter how trivial or mundane is material for a joke, but that Seinfeld uses stand-up tehniques in his show to great effect.

One of the classic techniques of stand-up is what's called the "call-back". This is where you mention something and then later refer to it in an unexpected way. Example from a recent re-run is where George is fighting off his father's critism for using too much ketchup. As the scene evolves, George is told of a bra salesman job and his father gets his mother to loan them a bra for them to examine. George gets mad at the end and throws the bra on the dinner table and his mom yells, "Watch out, you got ketchup on it!" It seems so simple to write about it, but it was a great laugh and the perfect end to the scene.

Another thing that impressed me was when he talked about "The Contest" where he said the fun was seeing how far they can go with the subject and still stay within the rules. That being "within the rules" made it seem a challenge and heightened the stakes for the writers to come up with some really inventive writing. It makes sense to me. Knowing that they weren't going to actually directly refer to masturbation made it that much more enjoyable when they veered close to it without actually saying it; "Are you still master of your domain?" (Which was a call-back in the episode where George was a hand model briefly, BTW).

Interesting 60 Minutes segment, with one minor untruth. The shows he did at the Fox during the Atlanta Olympics weren't sellouts. The ticket was real steep for Atlanta and the games sucked everyone's wallets dry, leaving less than full houses for other shows going on at the time. . .

Oh come on. When Jerry gets balder and not as famous (just five years down the road), you'll see Shoshonna dump Jerry for someone younger, more handsome. :)

He'd better sign a pretty rock-solid prenuptial, is all I'd caution.

I thought Jerry's interview on Sixty Minutes last night was really excellent. Unfortunately, it sounds as though he may end the show after next season, the way he was talking about settling down and moving back to his home state of New York. Oh well, at least we can enjoy the time we got.

PS-Never thought the Seinfeld writers were actually funny in real life. Last night's interview changed my mind!

Remember on 60 Minutes when Jerry said that he didn't know JFK Jr. was married? Well, on Entertainment Tonight on Feb. 20 he said that he knew and he was just setting the interviewer up. SEE! I told ya. ...Sorry, I just had to vent. --OJs a liar
