In"The Outing" (where Jerry and George are thought to be gay), why is there an awkward moment at the coffee shop when Elaine gives Jerry the works of Midler (or whatever)? She (Midler) has some sort of a connection to the gay culture? If it's in some FAQ, let me know and I'm sorry. :P

Yeah, her original base audience was gay. She started her solo acreer performing in gay bathouses in NYC. Barry Manilow was her bandleader.
