Woody Allen

I'm late on the scene here so forgive me if this is old ground.

Why is that Jerry never mentions Woody Allen as an influence when he's interviewed? His show VERY Woody-esque that I cannot believe that Woody was not an influence.

There are some scenes that are directly taken out of Woody Allen films. Like the time Jerry is standing in line waiting for theatre tickets and he starts bragging how he likes to tear up money. That is directly borrowed from "Broadway Danny Rose".

The character George is completely borrowed from any Woody Allen film. All his mannerisms are just so Woody that it's unbelievable - and he's not even Jewish !!

Hey, I love woody and I love seinfield but I was a little disappointed to hear Jerry name Robert Klien and Bill Cosby as his major influences. Is Woody too close to home to admit that a fellow New Yorker had an influence?

Could be he just finds it too obvious to mention. He might be talking about who influenced his stand-up act, in which case Klien and Cosby are more closely related.

Well remember Jerry is only half the equation. Larry David, whom George is based on also contributed; there were also other writers. Not being a big Woody Allen fan I was unaware of the "theft". Though Jason Alexander has said that in the beginning he was playing George as Woody Allen, though as time went on much less so.

There was a Cd posted in a binaries group that had Seinfeld going over stand-up and influences. There was no mention of Allen, but I think Allen was a bigger influence on Larry David than anyone. I've read that LD really wrote the early eps and Jerry, "punched them up", so the stong Woody Allenisism of George (in the early eps.) comes from there. David was in a Woody Allen movie too, so it seems to fit.

Given that Jerry can't control Jason's acting like Woody for the first few seasons and cannot control the writer's influences I guess the answer is that he probably has no personal reason to thank Woody since he did not directly bring Woody's influence to the show.

If you watch Seinfeld you'll notice that even though there is a strong Woody Allen influence Seinfeld himself never strays from his own mainstream observational humor. The Woody-esque neurotic New Yorker flavor was brought to the show by Jason Alexander's antics.

Oh my god I just did more analysis on Seinfeld than I did in 4 years at college! :)

My suspicion is LD loves Woody but not Jerry, though probably respects him as a master from another generation. Jerry is really more polished and suave to me, not in Woody's nebish mold.
