How about having them do a Seinfeld thing for a brief (but substantial) part of a show? (Instead of focusing a whole show on it.)
For example, what if there was a town fund raiser, maybe to "Save the Dewey Decimal System"--(with the campaign logo; "Inexistence Begins with I") And, during the fundraiser, there is a talent competition. Some of the members of the town put on a play called "Springfeld".(SPRING-FELD)
Homer is Jerry.."Man...there's NOTHING to do...Bor-ing....Yep, Just me and you nothing..(In Doughnut voice: "Hmmmm.....airr".)
Mr. Burns is George.."How come I can't get a date...must be my bald head...or more likely my crustated hangnail.."
Apu is Kramer.."Oh, no...My boys need to be free...they feel [with Kramer wave of hand up in the air] suffocated otherwise...For real, go free boys...go before they come..[Show actual boys running out back of stage.] (Of course Otto would be more appropriate...but part of the joke would be the mismatched personalities.)
Barney is Elaine (with wig and lipstick).."Get OUT...you're getting married?" [Pushes Mr. Burns in chest..Mr. Burns knocks into set wall..set collapses..ambulance comes, etc.]
During the play, ("The Contest" reference): Can't drink beer for 20 minutes. Real Homer: "When is this stupid play over..." (Even though 'Jerry' character can't drink a beer, Homer can't wait and ends up drinking a beer during play anyway.) Barney: [Slaps money on counter].."I'm out!".."Burrrrppppp!!" [Passes out for real on floor]. Mr. Burns: "I'm having a hard time keeping my self-control with that woman over there." [Show naked woman, in apartment across the way, eating cavier out of Tupperware.] "At least she could have used the 'Safety-Seal'" [Gets the willies..and shakes his body; "Eeeg..."]
