We'll its been a year....

Where's the Seinfeld reunion? They should be getting out of jail any day now. If there was no reunion why were they sent to jail for one year, instead of a less specific time?

     That doesn't mean a whole lot, except as a plot device for that episode by
itself (remember, they could have gotten four years). If there were going to be
a reunion on the anniversary,.it would have had to be completely filmed, edited
and in the can by now. It didn't happen. All of the Seinfeld gang was busy over
the fall and winter with other projects, even intermittently Jerry, who's been
making some humorous spots for AmEx and preparing his new standup routine for
debut late this year. So there will be no Seinfeld reunion in 1999 except in
your imagination.
     There may well be a one-shot Seinfeld reunion someday, as either a TV or
theatrical film. Jerry has said he won't preclude that, although he has no
desire to do any other feature film projects (he doesn't see it as his medium,
at least as an on-screen performer). But there will not be a resumption of the
old series. Jerry once again ruled it out in a recent NBC interview with Bob
Costas.

A different kind of Seinfeld reunion IS scheduled to happen May 14, but we won't see it unless we happen upon the right Los Angeles restaurant by chance. The four main stars have made a pact to get together for dinner every May 14 in Southern California from now on, as sort of a private reunion on the anniversary of the last original show.

One thing I WISH the powers that be at NBC would do...on or about May 14, replay the finale episode re-edited with the alternate ending, to let us see what a different outcome would have been like and whether it might have been funnier. (I'd also trim enough material out of the show to bring it down to an hour's running time.) Why won't that happen, even though that happens to be one of only two episodes for which NBC might still have some broadcast rights (the other one being The Puerto Rican Day, which was never re-run)? Probably because bringing back Seinfeld, even for one night, might remind us how today's so-called "Must See TV" tends to suffer by comparison.

I still dont see why he had to spoil it for everyone else by not allowing any spin offs involving the major characters. It reinforces my impression of him as totally self absorbed. (Not the character. The man)

Peter Mehlman is trying with 'It's Like You Know' and we can see that even with an excellent team, good ensemble, the wit, magic and excellence of 'Seinfeld' is not there. Lets enjoy what he did 9 years and 180 episodes is a great collection of work. It is time to move on and grow, for jerry and us.

That's the arguement...a spin off may have been good, but chances are it would have been bad...face it, a spin off like Frasier doesn't come out every year (just look at the other Cheers spin off The Tortellis) and M*A*S*H which had a success with Trapper John, M.D. but a stinker with AfterM*A*S*H...the best bet is not to spin off a character, leave the show alone...

The Tortellis? I've never heard of it. I presume it only ran for one season. Was Rhea Perlman in it? Was it post-Cheers? Please somebody tell me!

All off the top of my head, so some info may be a bit off:

--Took place in Las Vegas. --It was about Nick Tortelli (Carla's ex) and his new wife (that tall ditzy blonde who's married to Casey Kasam in real life) and the kids Nick and Carla had. --I'm certain Rhea Pearlman made an appearance or two. --Was on the air toward the end of Cheers' run. I don't think it lasted one full season (maybe it did, but just barely).

It'll perpetually be the hard half of a two-part trivia question (Name the two spin-offs from Cheers).

Actually it lasted about 14 episodes, and it was near the middle of the series (Cheers), according to the complete directory to prime time network and cable TV shows (when all else fails, use this book...) The Tortellis first aired on January 22, 1987 (Cheers ended in 1993, so that's not exactly near the end, in fact it is near the begining, 1982)...and The Tortellis was last aired on May 12, 1987...

It ran in 1984 I believe, for about 14 episodes...the show focused on Carla (Perlman's) ex husband, his new wife, and their family...I have never seen it, but it has become somewhat forgotten...and 1984 was not post-cheers, it was during cheers...

I always thought that NBC had (or would) strike some sort of deal with (the cast) to come back for a special. Anyone know the status of this? Are Jerry and the others still holding steadfastly to never doing the show again? Or has NBC braken their resolve?

Who ever heard of "until you've thought about what you've done" as a jail sentence? If they had been sentenced to 30 months, somebody would be expecting a reunion special to air in November of 2000. No matter what it had been people would have read too much into it. The reunion special, if it ever happens, will pick up after a point of time in which they have been out of jail and had some time to rebuild their lives. 4 unemployed homeless ex-cons just isn't that funny.

     NBC would love to get the crew back even for a one-shot, given the way
must-see TV has turned into might-miss TV in the Nielsens this year.
     Jerry won't rule out an eventual one-shot TV or theatrical film reunion,
some time down the road (but not on the first anniversary...it would already
have had to be filmed by now to air the 14th of next month). There is no script
yet, not even an announcement about a possible treatment for one. Seinfeld's
and Larry David's contractual commitments to NBC are through, as are those of

contractual arrangement for everyone. (The only Seinfeld material for which

Seinfeld told Bob Costas last month that he will never do another sitcom again.

on to other projects as well.)

Incidentally I misspoke in an earlier post about one thing. Turns out the annual Seinfeld cast re-union may not always happen on May 14th. This year, Jason Alexander revealed that it had already happened in April, around the time of the first anniversary of the wrap party for filming the finale, in Los Angeles. They agreed to alter the date because of everyone's conflicting schedules next month. (Jason has production commitments for the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie, Michael Richards has more filming to do in London, and Julia has some projects to get started on as well...Jerry is back home in NYC honing the script for his new standup routine which we might see this summer or fall in a club tour if all goes well.) It may go back to May 14 next year. Or it could end up being a moveable feast datewise, although it will always be in the spring and always in Los Angeles, where everyone lives except for Jerry.
