"I like their old stuff better"

Alas, poor Seinfeld is suffering a common fate in American pop culture these days. I call it the "I like their old stuff better" syndrome.

Listen for it. If a conversation about a particular music group, comedian, whatever, is taking place, inevitably someone will pipe up with. "I like their/his/her old stuff better."

You don't even really have to know anything about the subject, just say, "I like the old stuff better," and you're sure to get knowing nods of approval and votes of affirmation. I actually heard someone say this about Mariah Carey (sp?) the other day!

Cliche passing for discernment.

IOW, if something (relatively unknown) is really good/funny/entertaining, the hungering masses will end up finding out about it eventually, and it will become "cool." At this point, the creators of this "cool" thing don't have to try as hard anymore.
