What I heard was that the body part was always "clitoris" but the original name of the character was going to be "Cloris." I think at some point they asked the audience what they thought the name would turn out to be and one woman guessed "Dolores." The producers liked that name better and stuck with it.

When I saw this, I just assumed that the US pronunciation must be different from the UK one. Because, the way *we* say it, "clitoris" simply does not rhyme with "Dolores".
