Seinfeld site for the future...

Im working on a Seinfeld site right now, it has every episode recorded in real audio, its only audio, but if you have seen every episode like me the audio is enough, the site has reached over a gig, so finding a cheap host for over a gig will be tough, but hopefully in the future i can have a site up and running, its all on my hard drive now, and cd-r but hopefully there will be a day when i can place this site on the internet, this site also contains over 50 video file in real video format, and the a huge archive of seinfeld information about the cast, characters and every aspect of the show, it also has a built in search engine so you can look up a particular episodes based by character played in it, actors that played in it, and terms used, if this was on the internet it would be the best seinfeld site ever, i guess for now all i can do is give it out on CD-R i cant see selling it for a profit, even thou i see lots of people selling all the episodes on CD for like $40 a pop. Ive invested hundreds of hours making it, i guess i should get something for all my work, I also have all the episodes on tape due to my work. each episode is 5.03 mb's and if anyone is iterested most shows are 21min 40sec without commercials, the whole series with no commercials is 66.5 hours long, it takes almost 3 days to listen to them all. :) and the episodes run continuously, so all you have to do is click on any episode and the shows will run one after the other like a seinfeld marathon, reply if you have any suggestions on a good host to place this site on or if your interest in seeing the site or ideas for the site.

Jason -- take a look at Seinology.com -- it's the site you are trying to be, and already has this type of audio/video in the works -- if anything, I'd suggest you work with them to get the audio out there.

yes stuff on the net is illegal... but you are referring to Newsgroups, kazza, ftp, etc.. very rare that someone would put complete episodes either in audio or video on a much more public medium such as a website. you could get away with doing it as long as you never put an ad on your site or ask for donations.

in regards to hosting those. Not only would you require a server that allows you to store the data....ie webspace. You must make sure you figure in bandwidth limitations. ie. enough per month to allow users to download. really you are going to want somewhere around unlimited bandwidth which will get very very pricey. not to mention the webspace costs.

if you limit the bandwidth to something like 30gb per month you risk hitting the middle of the month or last couple days where no one can even view your site. which won't look very good on your part. some hosting companies will allow you go over your bandwidth however they always charge much more per gb when you go over your limit. so unless you plan to put ads up which will definatly raise eyebrows on the seinfeld camp if they see it. it will be very difficult to host what you are talking about

my clips are not originally in quicktime format. so i have no idea what you are talking about when you say convert from quicktime to real format.

also it is quite easy to accomplish that conversion.

Thank you for all the info13erla, all my episodes are syndication .

My largest concern for this site is space, the cost for over a gig of space would cost far too much for an average person to afford. Most hosting sites only give you 100 mb's I would need at least 11 hosts.

The legal problems, im sure I would have to contact Sony and maybe even Jerry if that's possible. Im not sure if the 100 million he got from Sony signed all his rights away. I know he still receives residuals.

This site has NO banners ad's of any kind, I would not profit in any way. I would need someone to help invest in it. I know I would never find a person to invest in something non-profit.

With all that accomplished I would still have bandwidth issues. I don't see anyway of getting it off the ground, so for now it will just have to live on two CD-R's.

As for QuickTime files, the problem I have with them is when I try to convert a QuickTime file to a Real Player file with Real Producer 2.0 it tells me that I don't have the right codec to convert this file. This program doesn't allow updates of codec's.

When both TBS and FOX gained syndication rights they each required no street sales for x amount of time. I'm sure by now FOX time limit ran out. But you can be sure being that TBS recently bought the rights that there isnt much chance in DVDs.

This is important because i'm sure there would an issue if your Site hit the net with eps that TBS might claim you are taking away from their show and blah blah blah.

you say you have syndicated versions. Do you have any station markings. I know most Fox broadcasts around the US toss their logo in there after they return from break. and TBS has theirs on the whole time.

My guess is that if you were to get authorization from Sony they might give you uncut master copies of the show. I highly doubt it would happen though.

Quicktime to Real. The major reason you're going to have troubles converting is that quicktime isn't just 1 type of format. all quicktime files are not the same, in that they each could contain different video and audio compression.

Of course a Real app won't be able to support all these types of compression, even though they are universal in the video and audio world :-) Making one wonder why using Real for video or audio is worth while.

However assuming you are on PC you can download an app called tmpgenc at www.tmpgenc.com demo works for 14 days. This app if you grab a quicktime addon for it...can convert mostly all quicktime files (not sure if it supports mpeg4 compression) to mpg/vcd format. then you should be able to use Real Producer to convert to real.

tmpgenc has the always helpful batch feature so you that would aid you in converting a lot of files.

With TBS picking up syndication rights I doubt there will be any chance for this site to go up.

The real audio files are just that audio, no video so there isn't any station markings

The reason I choose Real format was that when you convert any file be it an mpeg/avi/wav it condenses the size of the file by 1/10th.

For example: When I record an episode I run the audio into my pc from the vcr. I record the audio coming in with cool edit 96, when I save the episode, the wav file size is 75mb's when I convert it with Real Producer 2.0 the file ends up being around 5.07mb's. So a 21min episode is reduced to almost the size of an mp3. That's almost tolerable to download on a dial-up connection.

And your right about all QuickTime files not being the same on occasion I will get a QuickTime file that im able to convert.
