What do these sites say??? That the little boy who killed the little girl was violent and fought with her the day before he shot her. No wonder when his mother isn't at home the whole day because she has to work all day. And no matter if there are 100 or 1000 people shot in Germany it is far less than in the US. And so on and so on.... Allthough this site is about Seinfeld iI do have to write this. I mean how could you walk around and don't see that there is something terrible wrong in your country. Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against the US (They did a lot for Germany during and after WW II. I think it is a great country and I am goining to study in San Diego for at least a year but I think you need some self-criticism and some alternative media There are a lot of things in Germany who are also not correct but we don't pretend like there is everything allright.

Oh, I don't pretend 'everything is all right', there's tons of things I would change or improve in my country if I could! Unfortunately, it is MM himself that gets on my nerves. ;-) And he has been shown to not be as truthful as he could be himself in order to get his point across.
Yep, I know. California is not my home, my husband's job is here. I am appalled at the problems with education here, and my child will definitely be home schooled when the time comes! (I'm a retired teacher).
You would think people would understand that if more $$ was spent on education, there wouldn't be a need for all those prisons! Duh. >:-(

I'm madly in love with education but it saddens me that those who wish to promote use sloppy logic in order to do so. The fact of the matter is that even when you adjust for inflation the numbers you crunch show that in the early 19th centuary when there were no compulsary education laws(such laws which did indeed promote an educated America) the crime rate was lower even though you needed a microscope to see the amount spent on education.

In these neo-conservative political conditions money that is pulled out of education, and more importantly special education, is not really saved. The cost to society in real dollars, safety and human suffering, for abandoning these kids is much higher in the long run.

Just to clarify--I'm not one of those people who thinks money should just be thrown pell mell at education--unfortunately, most of the money goes to administrative positions and never gets to the teachers in the trenches or the kids... when I was in public schools, the district, a very large one in Texas, probably made more than a billion dollars in federal and state money a year. I was given the quote once that it was something like $5000 per student!! On paper that sounds great, doesn't it? But the kids don't get it!!!
I started as a new teacher in 92 at the hefty salary of $22,000 a year! Woohoo! By the time I left teaching 6 years later I was all the way up to $30K a year. Benefits were not that great. My entire classroom budget each year was $100. That's it. My classroom had NOTHING in it when I started. No maps, no American flag, nothing. One year we didn't even have textbooks, I had the teacher's manual and had to make copies everyday of what I wanted the kids to read and keep. Another year I had to teach a Bilingual class that I wasn't certified to teach--people who were certified got a $5000 bonus for the year--me, nada, because I wasn't certified!! And I don't speak Spanish! So who had to work harder, the bilingual Bilingual class teacher who got the bonus, or me, with a classroom full of kids straight out of Mexico who couldn't speak any English? Not something to motivate you to want to stay for more!! Very frustrating.
My schedule was usually about 7 am to 6 pm, with a 2 hr round trip commute. That's not counting hours of preparation time and grading papers, etc. at home each night and on the weekends!! My husband thought I was crazy. And don't even get me started on all the politics and teaching state mandated tests that teachers have to put up with. Grrr. Finally I had it and retired from teaching. I miss the teaching and kids, but definitely *not* the low pay and crap from 'higher ups".
That's where the money needs to go, to the teachers and the kids, to keep *good* teachers, and not just the people who are warm bodies, which unfortunately, make up the average of the faculties. :-( I could tell yoou horror stories about some of the people I encountered who were called 'teachers' but were the farthest thing from that that you can imagine.
If they would take all the wasted admin people and programs out, I believe miracles in education could be made! But the bureaucrats hold all the power in education, and the teachers and the kids are the ones who are paying the price. My child will never go to public schools under these conditions.
And the future of our next generations really scares me, knowing that they will not be equipped to handle this world on their own! :*( Unfortunately, in our district, the classs with the highest drop out rate was 4th grade! These kids would join gangs (this was an inner city school) and one of my ex-students' friends won the dubious honor at the age of 14 as the younger murderer in the county. He used to come to my classroom all the time, until he killed a 7-11 store manager by shooting him in the head for some candy bars and the money in the register. What a waste. :*(
