I may well have one of the most expansive Seinfeld memorabilia collections ever, (not counting people like Jerry himself.) I can't even begin to list what I've got. Tell you what, when I get home tonight, I'll do an inventory and I'll give you the list.
Let me start by saying my eBay feedback rating is about 75 and all but a half dozen or so auctions were for Seinfeld related merchandise. My best estimate is that I've spent about $3-4,000 so far over the past 3-4 years on this 'sickness'. You'll see what I mean when I post the list.

Videos All 180 episodes, 2 Emmy consideration tapes (from '97 and '98, both still in plastic), the Stand-Up Confidential tape, the "I'm telling you for the last time" tape, the 100th Episode tape, both Seinfeld blooper tapes, and about 11 hours of taped pre and post-Finale hype (Interviews, restrospectives, speculation, A&E Biography specials, Letterman, Leno, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, Hard Copy, yada yada yada.)

1 original Seinfeld episode shooting script. From "The Caddy". (It's the prop guy's copy. It includes notes about what he's going to need for each scene. Really cool.)
An ASSMAN license plate from NY. Not real, but stamped aluminum painted to look exactly like the real ASSMAN plate. (I keep it in my car window.)
A nearly life sized cardboard cutout of the gang (from a bookstore promotion when EW devoted their issue to Seinfeld).
About 15 bumper stickers with various Seinfeld related quotes on them and several Vandelay Industries Parking Permit window decals. (One on my car, the others in an envelope.)
An actual ticket to the taping of the pilot episode in 1989, and another ticket for a season 5 episode but it doesn't say which.
A 500 piece jigsaw puzzle of "The Kramer" portrait. Unopened.
A $1000 "Seinbucks" bill. (Fake money given to the crew for a "Vegas Night" party.)
3 Seinfeld switchplates, one of Jerry, one of George ("The Timeless Art of Seduction") and one of Kramer ("The Kramer", same as the puzzle.)

An exact replica of the lunch menu from Monk's Coffee Shop.
And a shrink-wrapped Seinfeld CD complete with a free 10-minute calling card.
Wow. What am I missing? There are actually a few things I've got an eye out for. There's a genuine Swiss Army knife with the Seinfeld logo on it, and the Superman figurine.

I would suggest that individuals who have copyrighted items in their collections that were acquired thru less-than-legitimate channels leave them off their lists.
But taping copyrighted shows for your own PERSONAL use is legal. It is only the selling of them or the displaying of them to others in a way that infringes on the owner's copyright that is illegal. But, I guess, you mean if they purchased the tape from a "bootlegger" then I guess it is illegal.
