Last night's rerun showed Kramer and Mickey working as "stand-ins" for soap actors. What exactly do stand-ins do? It looked to me like they taped their scene and then recreated it with people who couldn't act, for no apparent reason. Surely there is a point to all of this?

Stand-ins take the actor's places as crew members, check lighting and camera angles. This saves the actors the time and effort of doing it.
