Thoughts on season opener???

I thought the season opener was...well, "blah". Does anyone else agree???

I didn't turn it off, but halfway through it, I picked up my John Grishman book and started reading it. And normally "Seinfield" has my full attention for the whole half hour.

As someone who's looking forward to being married eight months from now, I was a little turned off by the fact that Jerry's engagement was dropped from the show so lightly. That, on top of seeing George's no-emotional reaction to Susan's death (and cheering that he was free at last) makes me fed up with the "Seinfield" marriage-bashing.

The whole basis of Seinfeld is that the characters are unlikable!!! Are any of these characters people you would be proud to hang around with? If any of these characters were to get married, the chemistry of the show would be thrown off balance, and seeing how many of the plotlines revolve around their dating antics, it is best to keep them single. How you can equate your dislike of the show to your upcoming nuptials is beyond me.... it is a sitcom, and should be treated accordingly. I doubt that the show will have people thinking twice about their upcoming weddings or affecting their own views toward marriage.

Seinfeld didn't start with a bang, but then again, the show has always needed to warm up before it got good. I am worried a bit about Larry David's departure, but it was still very funny in spurts ("My neck is like one big monkey fist!" had me rolling on the floor -- hmm... maybe I'll get a new sig...). Plus, the season premiere was still funnier than many Larry David episodes, so I'll reserve judgement.

I think you have conditioned yourself to perceive things as funny when you watch the show. But really, Kramer fighting kids is pretty blah. I mean as incongruity goes it's same-old same-old. And the end of the KRamer stuff was just the same as the AIDS walk. If the kids had been developed as really annoying so that you could laugh at your own guilty pleasure for seeing them pummeled, that would be funny. Mulvah/Delores just said Hi. Elaine was funny. Peterman was far-fetched, but the character is so pale at far-fetched compared to Kramer who is Mr. far-fetched personified on sitcoms today that the Bruma stuff was blah. The reason it was called "The foundation" was obviously because that was the only really solid comedy in the episode.

Well then I must have been conditioned that way too, along with many other people. Really, who are you to say what's funny and what isn't? Maybe you didn't like it, but there are a bunch of us who did. And if it wasn't funny, then what were we laughing at?

Reasons to laugh at unfunny things can range all over the place: you think something *should* be funny; you remember funny things that were done in previous episodes by the same characters; mean-spiritedness; exhaustion; and so on. Since you were the one laughing at the unfunny things, you tell me. :-)

Um.........what the hell are you talking about? I wasn't laughing because my mind was conveying images of prior episodes and the characters' mean-spiritedness, selfishness, etc. I laughed because it FUNNY - the reason most people laugh at things. And you missed my point, too - I was referring to how you thought things weren't funny unless you said it was, and how stupid that idea was.

BTW, Simonfeld is much funnier than "Dirk Coburn" (but then again....)

So what you're saying is,even though I thought the scene with Kramer chasing and fighting the kids was hilarious,it wasn't funny because you haven't given it your approval? What one person finds humor in might not be as amusing to someone else....

I don't understand how you have made it this far and still watching the show. Were you also outraged by:

• Kramer being mistaken for retarded after being hit in the mouth "The Jimmy"
• Masterbation being discussed openly "The Contest"
• A woman in a wheelchair careening down a hill "The Handicapped Spot"
• Elaine, Kramer and Newman kidnapping a dog "The Rabbi"

You know what? I just figured out who you are. You are the waitress in that diner near The Bubble Boy's house. I should have known that you would spell Jerry's last name the same way you pronounced it!

I was extremely disappointed. The humor did not casually flow as it has in the past; it was sort of forced. None of the storylines were truly interwoven, and much of it seemed pointless (such as the reappearance of Dolores). Plus, they dropped Jerry's engagement like they wished it had never been included in the show (although some people were obviously amused by the "hate you" flashback; a bit too easy and convenient if you ask me). I don't know; to be frank and succint, I thought it sucked.

Actually, I thought it was better than most of the episodes of the last two or three seasons.
