I was watching a rerun the other night in which Jerry, Elaine and George were at a party. This horrible woman was going on about "Where is my fiancee? Have you seen my fiancee?" After that she referred to him as her "baby" and Elaine said :
"Maybe the dingo ate your baby..."
I enjoyed her aussie accent, and her self-satisfaction upon delivering this unusual comment, but I wonder .... where the hell did THAT come from?
It comes from the Meryl Streep flick "A cry in the Dark" when her baby disappears in the outback and she claims to have seen a dingo run off with it but no one believed her and she went to prison. It was based on a true story.

Meryl Streep played Mrs. Chamberlain in the movie. Nobody does accents like Meryl Streep does, and nobody can mimic Meryl Streep's Australian accent better than Elaine!
there was a movie a few years ago, with meryl streep, (or glenn close?) i believe, based on a true story about an australian woman whose baby was taken away by a wild dingo ... (cry in the dark? cry in the night? something like that.) i think elaine's remark references the movie/story.

Yes, the exact title was "A Cry In The Dark" (1988) starring Meryl Streep as Lindy Chamberlain, and Sam Neill as her husband. Certainly worth seeing, IMO. Streep (once dissed by our Jerry as a "big phony") got one of her many Best Actress nominations for it.

The woman maintained that the baby was stolen by a Dingo, a wild dog native to Australia. A fantastic movie and performance well worth watching. Based on a true story. The trial was to Australia what OJ's was to US, i.e., sensational and higly publicized.

I believe there was a tv movie based on the story in which a woman blamed a dingo for taking the baby. I think the women got convicted but i'm not sure. That line was pretty funny if you sat through that movie, maybe because you were bored or something.

Actually, the line was from a movie called "Evil Angels" starring Sam Neill and Meryl Streep and Elaine's quote was of Meryl's attempt at an ocker accent. BTW, the mother, in real life, has been cleared of any involvement, and only recently, a family had a baby attacked by dingoes on Fraser Island, Queensland. Goes with the crocs in Sydney Harbour and the roos in the Opera House (sic).
