Kramer's girlfriend moves downtown, and Kramer says he's never been there. He makes it sound like a foreign country, yet in other episodes, he's been downtown (selling the old man's record albums with Newman at Bleeker Bob's records in the Village, and I believe the store with the Elaine mannequin was also downtown).

On Paramount Comedy Channel (in the UK) they showed The Marine Biologist episode on Sunday. George told Jerry that he always wanted to pretend to be an architect.
In season 1 Jerry and George go to a builing so Jerry can bump into a lawyer he met at a party (a woman). They say they are there to meet Art Vandalay for lunch (a made up friend who they say is an importer-exporter). Did George not tell the woman that he was an architect?

The difference is subtle, but I think it's there: Saying you're an architect is not (exactly) the same thing as pretending to be one. An example: I can tell people I work as the assistant to the traveling secretary for the Yankees (that's just a lie); I can constantly wear a Yankee golf shirt, make phantom phone calls to Mr. Steinbrenner, drop players' names in conversation, drop out of sight whenever the Yanks are on the road, etc. A lie is easy; pretending takes some effort.
For the record: I consider, "You know I've always wanted to pretend to be an architect" to be the greatest line in the history of television

I don't see how this is an inconsistency. It seems very consistent to me. He always wanted to pretend he was an architect, and does so on several different occassions. Saying that he never wanted to pretend to be an architect would have been grossly inconsistent.

I didn't think it would be that one as it hasn't been on in the UK for ages, and I was sure I saw it recently. I was in the US when I saw it back in April. Aha!
It's been a while since I've seen the episode, but I don't think George got the chance to pretend to be an architect. Hence his later claim to Jerry "You know I've always wanted to pretend to be an architect."
