Super Shower Heads

The goofballs Newman and Kramer bought shower heads from the guy as if they were buying guns from the black market. They were complaining that the shower didn't have enough pressure to rinse the shampoo out of their hair, causing them flat hair days. What do you think would have happened to Kramer if that new shower had shot at his hair?

What is the deal with all this "intrigue" anyway? Can't a guy buy whatever showerhead he wants in any hardware store? Do apartment leases in New York require you to use the landlord's showerhead? What if you want one of those "massage" showerheads with a hose?

Here in New York (City), there's been a big campaign for water conservation because we're pushing the water system to the limit. The city government strongly encourages landlords to install low-flush toilets, faucet aerators, and low-flow shower heads. (I don't like the sound of that :-) ) Since nearly all new shower head installations are low-flow, it's difficult to find the old kind, especially here in Manhattan. And yes, landlords frown on tenants who replace them.

BTW, the rendezvous with the "black-market" shower head guy was, if I recall, supposed to be on West 30th Street or thereabouts. That's a commercial neighborhood where quite a few trucks go. There are almost no pedestrians, except for the hookers who cater to the truck drivers. It's the sort of neighborhood where you'd expect someone to sell contraband out of the back of a truck.

NEWS FLASH --- Low-flow shower heads are the law nationwide!

In an otherwise humorous commentary on NPR's Morning Edition (Fri., 2/23), Judy Muller, an L.A.-based journalist pointed out that Federal law now requires all new shower heads sold in the U.S. to be low-flow shower heads (I don't like the sound of that :-) ). This applies equally to parched southern California as well as southern Florida, which occasionally has trouble staying *above* water.

She made reference to the recent "Seinfeld" episode, including the "black market" transaction. (Does she watch the show regularly?) She quotes someone as saying that the low-flow shower head is the biggest intrusion into the shower since Norman Bates.

I went shopping a few months back for a new shower head. I noticed the first few had "LOW-FLOW!" prominently featured on the packaging. I don't pay for water so I figured, screw that, I want a HIGH-FLOW shower head. Well, they just don't exist. Every single shower head I saw in 4-5 different hardware/retail stores proclaimed that it was "low-flow" and would "save xx% water compared to a regular shower head." I have no idea where one can even find a "regular" shower head, much less a high-flow head. If I could find that black marketeer I'd order one for myself. .......GW

The only difference between the low flow and a regular shower head is a small, easily removable plastic governer. Trust me. My hair stands up its so clean.
