Viewers discuss whether Kramer's dialogue in The Sponge episode was dubbed over, with speculation about whether Wall Street Journal was replaced with Wall Street Week for legal reasons.
I just finished watching the episode where Elaine is trying to find sponges, and I noticed something weird:
--at the beginning of the ep, Kramer says something like "I read it in Wall Street Week", but his lips don't match the word Week, instead it looks like he should have said "Journal". Was this bit dubbed over?
I rewound and watched that segment several times, and it looks like it was dubbed, but I'm not absolutely sure.
I think Wall Street Journal and ABC are joined together somehow, so if it was overdubbed, this may have been why.

Why was it dubbed over? Wall Street Journal is the name of a newspaper, while Wall Street Week is the name of a television show. If they dubbed out the word Journal because they couldn't mention the real newspaper on TV, then why did they replace it with another real-life name? And why would this even be an issue considering how many real-life businesses they have already made fun of?
There was at least one brand name they avoided. I'm not sure if they asked permission each time the used the actual name of a product, but I have heard that in The Rye, the script called for Kramer to feed Rusty Beef-A-Roni, rather than the fictional Beef-A-Reeno we saw on the air.
I guess the good folks at the Beef-A-Roni didn't want their product associated with horse farts. Imagine that.

Another good example is "Tyler Chicken", the company George was traded to in return for chicken based concessions. Tyson didn't want Seinfeld using their name.
FWIW, I've boycotted both Tyson and Chef Boy-ar-dee since the snubbings. Not that it's any great loss, though. I mean, what am I missing out on? Nasty canned pasta and pressed formed frozen chicken patties?

Maybe someone from NBC had a beef with someone at the Wall Street Journal world. Who knows, but someone from WSJ had to of said something for the NBC people to go into post-production and dub that word over.

I think they (or Michael Richards) may have screwed up the line and it was not caught during taping. Doesn't he say he READ it in Wall Street Week by Louis Rukeyser. He may have said Wall Street Jounal by mistake. If they had originally written 'Journal' they would not have used the name Rukeyser.

I think Jerry said they check with real companies before they use their name. He called up Tyson Chicken who did not want their name used because of the Alcohol Chicken in the ep even thought there is no such thing so in the ep they called it Tyler Chicken. That was the ep where George Steinbrenner traded George to Tyler.
