A few weeks ago, there was a string going on about the nationality of the Castanza's. Please forgive me if this point has already been raised, as I have been away for a few weeks. But...
In the calazone episode, which aired last night, George tells the owner of Pizzano's, that his "... last name is Castanza, which is Italian, so that almost makes us "pizzan" (I believe that means family??)
Anyway, would it not be safe to assume that if their last name is Italian, so are they???
Just a thought.
Of course the Costanzas are Italian; George does call the pizzeria owner "paisan" [countryman]. They are probably not Jewish, although who knows. But the side of the family that includes George's mother Estelle is almost certainly are Jewish: Frank says to George, pretty convincingly, in an episode two seasons ago, "I wanted to buy a Mercedes, but your mother won't ride in a German car." This is, of course, a specific and typical reaction to German products from Jewish people, especially those of Estelle's age-group, who lived through the Hitler period.

I may be dreaming this, but wasn't there an episode where it is mentioned that Frank Costanza sold supplies to the Catholic church?
Just to throw a red herring in here, there was a person named Costanza in Jimmy Carter's cabinet and at the time there was a big deal made about them being the first Greek-American cabinet member.

If I may interject for a moment, this same thread appearred in this NG a few months ago and, if memory serves me correctly, it went on for about 3 weeks, and was never really resolved. I personally felt/feel that Estelle is Jewish, but there are enough people on both sides of this issue to prevent the thread from ending in a reasonable period of time.
Maybe she just doesn't like foreign cars......
