The worst part of your question is "is it filmed on the 'New York' set", as if there's just one set in all of LA that's supposed to look like NY. In any case, it is filmed (I guess technically "taped") at CBS Studios in Studio City, CA. Sounds ironic that an NBC show is taped at CBS Studios. Gilligan's Island and Roseanne and Carol Burnett were all taped at the same studio--Roseanne still is, of course. That's all I know.

Isn't Seinfeld taped at the NBC studios in Burbank (southern CA)?

HELLO!!! On a CBS lot???!!??! Did you write that? It's filmed on the NBC lot. The exact same one that they film Friends, Single Guy, Mad about You, etc. If you see this on time, watch CNN's entertainment show today, WED, April 3. They have a nice long story dedicated to the lot. (They even talk about that Kramer/Johnie Cab snow shot in central park. They flew in a couple of tons of ice to fake that shot)

I don't know what they said on CNN, and I don't know where this park shot was done, but the exterior of George's in-laws' building was shot on the Paramount lot, with a couple of tons of ice.

Someone's toes are on their teeth... As "margall" stated, Seinfeld is absolutely filmed at CBS Studios - on a leased set from CBS Studios, in Studio City, CA, that is.

I just got a call from a Seinfeld asst. Producer. I had left my number with NBC when I was asking about where Seinfeld is filmed. Anyway, I think we're either both right or both wrong. According to this producer, Studio City is owned by CBS, but NBC contractually has the rights to a certain part of the studios there. They call it an NBC lot bcause they have filmed and will film there forever, although CBS owns the ground it sits on. He likened it to someone asking you "whose house is that?" Whould you consider it your house, even though the bank holds the note, or is it your house? NBC calls it their house, CBS owns the land underneath it. You go to CBS' Studio City, and then ask for the NBC lot. (If you want the number to the Seinfeld set, let me know. They gave it to me) P.S. I also asked him if it was true that Jerry and Elain were going to get married. He said "No...well, not to each other".

Here's the truth, I swear...NBC does indeed have a lot. It's in Burbank, and they use it to tape shows like Tonight and Later, and the KNBC news. Used to be a lot of game shows there, too.

NBC doesn't film Seinfeld anywhere, because Castle Rock films it at CBS. NBC doesn't film Frasier anywhere because it's Paramount that films that at Paramount. Cybill is filmed on the CBS lot, and broadcast on CBS, but it is not made by CBS. NYPD Blue is not made by ABC, it's made by Fox at Fox. And that's Fox the studio, not Fox the network, or the local Fox lot, which are three different places. Confused yet?

Simply put, with extremely rare exceptions, networks do not make prime-time shows. They are made by studios and licensed to networks for broadcast.

No matter what you may believe, Seinfeld is definitely, certainly, without question filmed on the CBS lot in Studio City, CA. When you drive through the gate, it's the first stage straight ahead. The Studio is owned by CBS, but it's a rental lot: a variety of studios lease space there. That's the truth. How many people have to say it before you believe it?

You'll notice I'm on AOL...I also have accounts on all the major services, and on two ISP's as well. Am I worth listening to only when I'm not posting from AOL? Different services for different purposes.

Seinfeld, in my humble opinion is one of the worst shows for fake sets. The street scenes outside Jerry's apartment are pathetic, as are most scenes involving somebody driving a car. Why, oh why can't NOrth AMerican TV shows actually film in the great outdoors, instead of an indoor studio. It really does look bad.

As far as I can tell, Seinfeld and Gilligan's Island were filmed (recorded on film that can be shown through a projector), and Roseanne and Carol Burnett were taped (recorded on videotape that is viewed through a monitor or TV). Of course, filmed shows are tranferred to tape. Also, the sound is taped in each case. ^^^^^

You are quite correct. Seinfeld is FILMED, because film has higher quality.

In fact, it's possible for the shows to be released directly from film - just projected striaght into a camera, and from there sent directly to the TV stations (who probably record it on tape for later broadcast). I don't know if they actually do this. But they definitely keep the original FILM footage and master edited final copy around for posterity.

NBC has far fewer production stages than CBS. And, even though NBC *licenses* the show, it has no ownership interest in it (given it was put in production before fin-syn rules changes).

Some network in-house production companies (which do own shows) are now actually making shows for other networks.

Carol Burnet was shot at CBS Television City, on the other side of the hill, at Beverly and Fairfax,not the Studio City lot.
