The great BOSTON COMMON / SINGLE GUY war

Okay, obviously, NBC's Thursday night line-up is pretty much set it stone for 1996-1997. "Friends" at 8:00, "Seinfeld" at 9:00, and "E.R." at 10:00. I'm sure, too, that "Caroline in the City" is secure and will likely retain its post-"Seinfeld" slot at 9:30.

But at 8:30, NBC has a choice. It's a cruel business, but only one show can go there. Some shows just have to be sent out to other nights. "Frasier" and "Mad About You" seem to be doing fine on their own. Others wither and die -- i.e. "Hope and Gloria." A few veteran shows were ousted from Thursday night, dropped in the ratings, and eventually died -- "Family Ties" and "Night Court," for instance. (Y'know, "Taxi" was once part of the NBC Thursday night line-up before it died a premature death.)

So what's it gonna be: THE SINGLE GUY or BOSTON COMMON. Which gets the hammock, and which will be thrown to the wolves? Both have done just what NBC wanted them to do: rank high in the Neilsens and keep the audience watching. (In this respect, these shows have done what GRAND and MADMAN OF THE PEOPLE couldn't do on Thursdays.) It's a tough choice. I think NBC will go with THE SINGLE GUY.

But BOSTON COMMON is not doomed. I mean, after all, WINGS was booted from Thursday, and it's still going.

I think Boston Common, The Single Guy and Caroline in the City are terrible...I'd say bring back Mad About You.....If it weren't too late. It was a mistake to pull it in the first place. -Eric

Nope, sorry, but the decisions are already made. NBC Must-See TV for Thursday next season will be Friends/Single Guy/Seinfeld/Suddenly Susan/ER. (I don't think that 4th show has anything to do with the late, lamented-by-some Mrs. Costanza-to-be.)

Boston Common is going to be moved to Sunday, while Single Guy stays at 8:30 on Tuesday. I believe Caroline in the City is going to be moved too, but don't quote me on that.

Caroline in the City is moving to Tuesdays at 9:30 in the fall. Single Guy is staying Thurs at 8:30 pm and Boston Common is moving to Sun at 8:30 pm, according to recent US network schedules for Fall '96.
