I don't think anyone has done any research on why or how certain newsgroups take off and others lie dormant. For example, rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc has always been a busy place while the other 5 mst3k newsgroups are virtually deserted. Just some crazy example of human pack mentality, I guess. People start posting in a certain group for whatever reasons, other people see that group is more populated and start posting there too and it snowballs.
