Fans praise the episode as a classic Seinfeld about nothing, particularly enjoying Kramer's coffee table book storyline.

Very good point. The doors do re-open 90.0% of the time. And the train will never take off if the doors in all cars are not fullu closed. However, there have been a few incidents(0.1%) in NYC when a train took off with someone's arm or some other part of the body sticking out of the door... Even, here in boring Boston, couple years ago some guy was stuck half-way in the door and the train(Red Line) took off. He was held by other 2-3 passengeers from falling out of the train until the next stop(That probably wouldn't happen in NYC :-)...He made it OK. The story made it to the Boston Globe...

I'm glad to see that Seinfeld has made it back to his roots. Tonight's show was a REAL Seinfeld episode, a classic, an episode about NOTHING. I just loved Kramer tonight, with his cofee-table book. Thas was hilarious!

Gosh, let me be one of the first to agree!

I've been a little dissapointed with this season so far, and I think
I have said that a few times on the net already ::smile:: but tonight's
episode was hysterical! My friends and I were actually on the floor
laughing well into the commercial break after the bit with the Chinese
     mailman, and Kramer driving by.
Unintentional ethnic offenses, crazies on the subway, and fun with
parents... now THIS is Seinfeld! No more suicidal jumpers hitting my
car, or jealous NBC execs joining Greenpeace. Thank goodness... back
to reality! (or as close as a TV show can get, anyway! ::smile::)

Oh, back to reality, huh? Like anyone would by a cigar store Indian as a gift for a female friend. And Kramer's coffee table book, that was believable. And the Gyros stand with people stealing food from other's caught in subway doors? In real New York if a subway door is not fully closed, they all re-open. So wouldn't the food thief be in danger of a serious pummeling? LAME LAME LAME

In article ,

Excuse me, your life experience seems JUST a little limited. I know plenty of people who would buy another person (why not a woman?) a cigar store Indian as a kitschy present. And Karmer's coffee table book idea was certainly plausible--believe me, I've worked in publishing.

That was a bit exaggerated, but certainly in the realm of artistic license. It's comedy, remember?

This was definitely one of the better shows of the season.

I LOVE things like the cigar store indian. And last check, I was a female so why wouldn't this be a good gift for anyone (male or female).

If I lived alone, I'd have this sort of thing spread throughout my house. When I HAVE lived alone, my place was oddly decorated; the cigar store indian would have been the crowning touch.

The coffee table book, I thought, was a cool idea. Very Krameresque. Especially the coaster. :-)

Sure, you might like an Indian, but you're not Elaine. Her reaction was, not surprisingly, one of bewilderment. 1)That's a hell of an expensive gift to give someone to make up for not giving them a ride home. 2)If he really wanted to make it up to her, he wouldn't have bought her something that absurd. 3)How convenient that Wynona happened to be a Native American, and Jerry happened to get Elaine that Indian. What an amazing coincidence. And Jerry's all hot for this woman, but doesn't even notice her ethnic background (very striking, for the record). Sorry, I ain't buying it. Go sell it to Jack and the girls on 3's Company.

As for Kramer's book, yeah, they do put out really stupid coffee table books (see Kelly Klein's "Pools", or Madonna's "Sex" for that matter). It just struck me as too smug, and well, "Seinfeldian". Hey, it's a coffee table book about coffee tables! Get it! Aren't we clever, now how can we work in a reference about being master of your domain.......

I agree. That indian must have cost a lot! If one of my friends couldn't give me a ride home they might have given me a stick of gum - Maybe.

Speaking of Wynona, wasn't she in an episode of Northern Exposuer?? The one that had the hot's for Ed, but he thought it was because he 'cured her'??

The thing was, Jerry thought it was kitschy, and was oblivious to the un-PC-ness of standing there whooping and chanting. He was just stuck on the idea of impressing Wynona with this great kitschy gift, and since he's not PC by nature (just not thinking) it never occurred to him that the statue might be offensive to a Native American.

It has nothing to do with sexual double entendres or someone pretending to be homosexual, so they probably wouldn't buy it. ;-)

That's not what the signs on the F train say. Of course I've never actually tested it myself.

Of course it says that. That's because 1) they don't want you delaying the trains, and 2) on the odd chance that there's some malfunction and the doors don`t open and you get dragged to your death. Which does happen every now and again. But if the doors didn't re-open, hundreds, maybe thousands of people would be killed every day. And think of the multitudes who would have to go Gyro-less!

I wondered when I saw this episode if the NY pronunciation is Jy-row. Especially with the diverse ethnic population (and supposed awareness). Out here in the wild west we have some authentic (read: owned and operated by same) Greek restaurants and they all clearly refer to these marvelous sandwiches as Yee-rohs (usually in a very loud voice :-)

Were the Seinfeld gang having some fun with this or what?

Sorry about the lack of Seinfeld questions/opinions/statements-of-fact.

I first had Jy-rows in Pullman,WA, but when I moved to Dallas,TX I met a man whos mother couldn't speak English, only Greek. He pronounced them Yearrrr-os, I think he knew the right way to say it, of course I can't roll my r's as well as he could.

In Winnipeg, they're known as Ghee-Rohs, but I imagine Jy-row is _acceptable_. Dave

maybe in greece its pronounced 'yeero', but having lived 20 years in brooklyn and rockville centre, which btw is 20 minutes away from massapequa, long island, jerry's hometown, everyone, including people at greek restaurants pronounced it as 'giiros' exactly the way jerry pronounces it. only when i arrived to california did i realize that people called it 'yeeros' as well.

Cool episode. Kramer was hilarious as usual.

"Hey Jerry! Look what I've got! Wo Wo Wo Wo Wo "

I also liked the way he ***rushes*** out the train for a Gyro! Kramer kicks ass.

Yup. the Scalper bit, making reservations, and indian giver had tears comin out my eyes. thank god I made it home from work in time last night to see it. Kramer hangin out the cab window was the icing on the cake though.

David Crotty: In what part of Gotham do you live?? I almost lost an arm and a briefcase on the #1 this summer. Those doors sure didn't open for me!! For me, that was one of the most realistic parts of the show! Taking the subway every day, I have learned you JUMP when those doors start to close. I have yet to see them open up for anyone! Brent

I used to ride the 1 every day myself, and can verify that the doors re- opening is not a sure thing. Two years ago, about four other guys and I forced open a door in which a guy was caught "halfway" when it closed. It was rush hour so evidently the conductor couldn't see him through the crowd.

David A CrottyMark Shneyder

I live on the upper west side and take the 1/9 train to work every day. If all the doors are not closed, they open and close again before the train leaves the station. Trains are almost constantly being delayed by people sticking their feet in the doors, holding them open so their slower friends can catch the train. If the doors didn't open for you, you are either abnormally thin, weak, or were riding a malfunctioning
