Correct me if I am wrong, but how could he leave if he didn't have a car? They were stuck in a garage and could not find Kramer's car. Wasn't that the whole premise of that episode? Are you sure you are talking about "The Parking Garage" episode from Season 3?
If you had a Cashmere sweater and a red dot, you would paint it? That would be very tacky and I would doubt the paint would look presentable. Have you ever used touch up paint on a car? It is so obvious.
The whole point was based on principle. No one should give anyone a defective gift intentionally. It was another example of George's thriftyness. I would get mad too, if I new someone intentionally gave me a defective gift, especially when the gift giver got a huge discount and tried to pass it off as a normal priced gift.
You see, Seinfeld is not really about nothing, it's about life and principles. It makes fun of different aspects of our life and various cultures. It tries to relate to everybody. I am sure everyone has seen some episodes and could relate from one of their life experiences.
When you go to a mall, does it have doors? like... you can get there and leave without a car... can't you? Here in Portugal we have elevators and doors to leave... and taxis, and subways... ;) And it's not like he was leaving anyone alone there... he could have left (I still think it was inconsistent).
I liked your second answer - even though you can send clothes to be dyed... and they end up looking good!

Yes, George can leave the mall if he wanted to. In addition to Mike's post, George is cheap and he would not want to spend taxi fare. If you see other episodes, he tries to bum off a taxi ride from Jerry or Elaine without paying. Another thing is that Kramer was carrying that heavy air conditioner around. Would it be right to abandon all your friends, so you can go to some show or whatever it was? When it comes to his friends, he is pretty adamant about it. I wouldn't leave my friends and be selfish like that. I think this is very consistent with George's character. At the rate the group was going, they would be lucky to find the mall entrance. This episode was obviously exaggerating the experience of not being able to find your car and how confusing large parking structures can be.
Mike - I didn't know that malls are made for cars there. I honestly was asking (ignorance, really!). And, unfortunatelly, I've never been to NY... but it's a big big dream to go there! :) And the 42nd Street Subway station... I've heard it's a pretty scary ride... unlike the Cyclone! ;)
Ryan - of course the episode was meant to be exagerated. And I also had in mind that he would be so cheap he wouldn't even bother to get a taxi... it just could be better explained, like Elaine saying to him to go home and George answering "Do you realize how much a cab would cost!?!?", and Elaine calling him cheap... you know...? I am very demanding... ;)
