   skating competition, MSNBC (Microsoft's internet news venture
   witn NBC) used the following headline after Tara Lipinski
   beat fellow U.S. skater Michelle Kwan for the gold medal:

"American beats out Kwan"

   Although MSNBC publicly acknowledges this error and has made

   Americans and Asian American community organizations are
   still outraged by such careless journalism by a credible news

Michelle Kwan, of course, was the American favored to win the top honors. She was featured on the cover of Newsweek as an American gold medal contender. Anyone who tuned in to the Olympics coverage for 10 seconds knew that. Except for the MSNBC news desk.

I would guess that this was an innocent mistake. Kwan had better name recognition than Tara Lipinsky so the headline read "American beats Kwan". That is correct. Lipinsky is American and stating that does not in the least detract from the Americanness of Michelle Kwan. The mistake was in the writer's not anticipating an inference of contrast in the statement.

You know, I'm starting to get confused. Which stereotype am I supposed to believe? Is the media liberal or racist? I guess the answer is that they are what you're not.

The writer's other mistake was in not anticipating the reactions of the easily offended. Luckily for them, writer's don't usually stoop to sanitizing their work, so the complainers will always have fodder for their misdirected outrage.

Pick one and run with it. Try to get really hot under the collar so you can spout off with a full head of steam. You won't peter out as quickly that way. Or read more of Tanaka's posts to get a better feel for proper annoyance. He's good at it, because he's rarely 'in your face'. He prefers to play it coy and incite others into posting angry words. Don't let it fool you. Ah young grasshoppa, learn at the feet of the master.

Sounds a lot like the many OJ haters who will not let the issue die.

Asian Americans have CONTINUALLY come up against this. Most non-Asians don't realize this. Journalists SHOULD realize this; it's been part of their training since the 70s.

i saw Lepinski (sp) on Ophra several weeks ago. has Kwan ever been on a talk show?

is Kwan also on the Campbell soup can? or do they only feature whites?

Kwan is on specially marked Campbell soup cans. you sent away for the campbell's souper's star soup cup with her signature on it too.

you can Tara's face on some of the campbell's soup cans too. but I never did find those smucker jam jars with Kristi Y. on them.

NO, they don't feature only whites.

They were both in town this past weekend for an ice show, Kwan was considered the headliner (i.e. she got higher billing than Linpinski in various promos), there is no question that Kwan is generally better known and more of a crowd favorite.

I'm curious about magazine circulation figures when they have no whites on the cover vs. when they have whites on the cover. If there's a huge drop in newsstand volume, this would document the extent of marginal private racism. People of color do seem to be vastly underrepresented on the covers of fashion magazines, despite commendable efforts to achieve fair representation on the inside pages. It seems that the racist preferences of the millions of newsstand buyers is sufficient to deter extending these reforms to the covers. It would be interesting to do a study on this.
