I always felt that George was a lot like Woody or Woody a lot like George. One of the two.
Now that you mention it, George in the first episode (from 1989) really reminds me of Woody. "This is the signal, Jerry!" I did meet a few guys about 10 years ago who acted in some ways like George, and a dentist in my neighborhood reminded me of Kramer, with the wild hair thing going.

That was the big criticism when Seinfeld first hit the air: George Costanza was Woody Allen redux, and Kramer was Christopher Lloyd redux. Of course, they both developed into unique and complicated characters, but this assessment at the beginning of the show's history is spot-on, imo.
