They've alluded to this in a few episodes but as far as I know, they never said where Kramer's money came from (i.e., his not having to work). Am I right?

Kramer always had something going on. There were times he made money. Like at the off=track betting parlor.
He never seemed to need money. He wasn't on unempyoyment or welfare. I like to think that he had a small trust fund that was from his father.
People should plunk down two-thousand dollars to live like him for a week! Do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors, and have sex without dating. That's a fantasy camp!

If you pay real close attention to every single episode, (every character I think - if not all most of them) come real close to big fortunes and big breaks and happy things and they never ever get them, hehe.

I think all 4 of the main characters always were going to score big and never really did.

I guess Kramer did win some money on the horse betting, but it was not a million.

Oh yeah. George winning the money from the stock that time. But I think those were the only 2 times that anyone was ever lucky. All the other times they really screwed themselves.

I'd say they got pretty lucky at the end when Jerry and George's sitcom finally got a big deal (still not Ted Danson money).
However, you're right about the characters always getting screwed out of money. I posted this a while ago, but Jerry always seems to lose bundles of cash (e.g. the Cadillac, paying for the hit and run lady).
