Did Elaine's boss know?

Did Elaine's boss know that she was at the Yankee's game or did he purposely try to teach her a lesson?

Obviously Elaine's boss saw her picture in the newspapers (he never missed the Sunday's edition!) on his flight and decided to teach her a lesson, I think, in a humorous way, and not directly reprimanding her for lying about her absence.

I always thought the opposite. I thought that he *didn't* notice Elaine in the paper. He seemed like he was hearing the story for the first time on the phone, and then had the idea to make Elaine wear the cap to the game as a joke on his friend.
