two different Georges

I tape every Seinfeld episode shown here in Seattle, and I have noticed that one channel I tape has been showing the 1st season, and the other channel has been showing much later episodes. Every night my wife and I watch 1-3 episodes, and it is really funny to watch the old ones back to back with a newer "in-their-prime" episodes. Some things I have noticed:

Jerry is a very consistent character, acting-wise. For all the slamming he took as a pure actor on that series, he portrays "himself" almost identically from season to season (unlike how Elaine goes through a few striking changes). Elaine, George, and Kramer all have vastly different personas in the later seasons, which probably has more to do with the writing then the acting... George is much more whinier and neurotic in the early seasons. When did George switch over to the more "confident" loser/liar we are accustomed to?

you gotta figure that george's changes are because of over time and the way/getting used to jerry's attitude toward him...

you can't expect a character to be the same throughout a series....your right jerry is relatively the same throughout the whole series without a doubt maybe some minor things here and there but really just about the same... elaine definatly made numerous changes...same with kramer....

The early George was more neurotic but lower-key, sort of like Woody Allen...in the later (post-Yankee) eps, George comes off as very shrill and rather obnoxious.

George's changes very closely correllate between a pre-Engaged to Susan and a post mortem Susan character...

    As far as Jerry staying the same throughout the series. I would agree
except to say that the early Jerry seems so much younger (not surprisingly)
and much more "new yorkish" in his speech and mannerisms.
    Jerry also became more bitter and confrontational (as did everything
about the show) in the later episodes.

Kramer's changes might be most striking of all. (to me atleast) I find early Kramer to be so much more understatedly funny. He was funny in an almost uncomfortably quiet way. Much different from the clownish rapscallion (sp?) we see much later.

Elaine's changes somewhat mirror Jerry's although the difference between her early and late selves do seem much more jarring than Jerry's
