Soup Nazi in Sleepless in Seattle

Did anyone catch the reference to the Soup Nazi in the movie "Sleepless in Seattle" ? Immediately after Meg Ryan finished listening to the initial phone call from Tom Hanks, the scene switches to the conference when she tells Rosie O'Donnel and the 2 guys about the call. As she is sitting down, one of the guys mentions a story he heard about the most hated man in America who makes the greatest soup in the world. Has anybody heard whether this was the source for the Soup Nazi episode? I have also heard that the Soup Nazi had been covered in local NYC papers or magazines.

The more general question is whether the show's personnel (including the cast) are NYC-based or actually live in LA and film occasionally in NYC for exteriors. Do the producers send writers out to NYC to get story ideas or do they live in New York to ensure inspiration?

The show is taped in L.A. I doubt many exteriors are shot in NYC. They all look like studio lots in L.A. I'm sure many of the writers are from NY, or go to NY for business, that's where they might get their NY story ideas. I've heard the real life Soup Nazi is pretty famous back east.
