It's not really a common word--more of a slang term.

I think it's made its way into the lexicon due to Superman (it is, of course, the alternate universe in Superman comics) and also due to the one-panel absurdist cartoon that appears in many papers' comic sections (highly recommended by me, if you've never read it--and sometimes you have to read it more than once to get the joke).
